About this listen

A razor-sharp novel of suspense about the lies families tell - and those we choose to believe - by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of Jane Doe.

Lauren Abrams wants nothing to do with her damaged mother, whose spurious testimony sent Lauren’s father to prison for murder years ago. After a serial killer’s confession to the crime restored justice, Lauren chose to live with her father and grandmother. Now an adult, Lauren has come home to the Sacramento family estate for good, her mother’s lies be damned...

It’s been decades since Donna made her cheating husband pay, but she hasn’t forgotten the past. She knows her estranged daughter has made a terrible mistake by returning to the estate. There’s more to the story of the welcoming old homestead - and her childhood - than Lauren knows.

As Lauren settles in, she is haunted by the questions of what really happened with her father, what her mother might be hiding, and what secrets the family ranch holds. It’s getting so dark, Lauren may not be able to see the truth to save her life.

The narrator sounds like an AI. I liked the back and forth of past and present and how perfectly they lined up together until the two stories met. I thought that the book was really good, but they dont quite wrap everything up. It felt like it should have had another scene with her ex boyfriend, amongst a few other things that were kind of left unfinished.

Great narration. Lauren’s story was great. At first I didn’t realize it was going back and forth from past and present. The twist at

I enjoyed the mom, daughter transitions and that ending! That was a twist I didn't see coming! The story kept me sucked in the entire time.

Deeply moving

The story is presented in a two person perspective one from the daughter, Lauren, the other her mother, Donna. The time perspectives also differ as well. At first the two time frames and perspectives seemed more of a bother until later in the story where it made sense and added to the tension. My compliments to the author for blending what could almost be two stories into one climactic conclusion.

A slow burn to an explosive conclusion

When you've been led to believed one thing all your life, it's hard to deviate from that belief. Lauren is caught in the middle if a he said, she said but really, who is telling the truth and will she learn what really happened before it's too late?

PRETTY GOOD READ!

I enjoyed most of the book but felt it could have been shorter and still been as good. I didn’t think the twists were surprising. The reader was good. I tried to give the story 4 stars but it came up 5 and wouldn’t let me change it.

A decent story.

I loved this book! And the narration was excellent. I would recommend it to anyone.

Awesome

The story was quite tedious. The back and forth between timelines is not my favorite device, but it did make sense for this particular story. Sadly, the story was underwhelming even though the ending wrapped the whole mess up in a tidy little package. The narration was better than the story deserved.

Thank heaven this is over!
