About this listen

From number-one New York Times best-selling author Fern Michaels comes a brand-new novel that blends her rich, character-driven storytelling with a hint of suspense, as a reclusive young woman struggles to piece her life back together....

Ellie Bowman barely remembers the incident that put her into a coma. When she awoke, filled with unease, all she knew for certain was that her boyfriend, Rick, was missing. She knew she needed to get away from her old life and recover in safety. With the proceeds of a video game she helped develop, Ellie starts over in rural Missouri, working from her cottage and trusting no one except her friend and business partner.

Yet even in this quiet small town, it’s impossible to completely isolate herself. Especially when a curious eight-year-old boy, smitten with Ellie’s pup, stops by every day to talk to him over the fence. Little by little, Ellie is being drawn back into the world through the neighbors and community around her, realizing that everyone has their own fears and obstacles to contend with.

But when Ellie hears that Rick has resurfaced, her nightmares return, and with them, small snippets of memory. No one has heard from Rick since before the incident, so why is he back now? Ellie wants to move forward with her life, but first she must find the courage to look into her past, no matter what she finds there....

What happened?

Spoiler: this was such an enjoyable listen and it was like the author was late for an appointment or something. Very poor ending.

Who is the main character?

The summary of the book is essentially a secondary story. I’m not even sure who the main character actually was, or what the main plot was. Characters developed in large, unrealistic jumps and did not seem sincere. If you’re looking for a sweet, rather simple story about friendship, this book may be for you. But not if you’re looking for a psychological thriller- or anything in that neighborhood.

Ridiculous Ending

The ending was all of a sudden. What woman hiss in a house with an assumed name for two years. And then to find out she, in the end really never needed to be hiding over something so ridiculous. Huge waste of time with most of this story. It could’ve gone somewhere good, but it never materialized.

So many unanswered questions

This book would have been great of it didn’t feel like the author just gave up and ended the story. There were so many unanswered questions such as did he come back to kill her or did he come back to apologize? He mentioned he could finally finish his mission; what mission?

I want to be a neighbor!

If only! If people were really like this and had the courtesy and respect for each other like those on this street, the world would be such a better place. Nice story and escape from the day to day stress and anxiety of today’s real world. Thank you Fern Michaels. Also, a wonderful, calm soothing voice of the narrator… great listen!

Good wholesome story

I love Fern Michael’s books. I read to get away from lives downs her stories are good. This book showed how a small community came together for their neighbors. I live in a small community in WV and we are all close and watch out for each other. When tragedy strikes families in WV we all pull together to help.

Kept me guessing

I liked the characters and plot of this book! It kept me engaged while sewing and I liked the ending and how the loose ends were tied up.
