About this listen

A new hilarious, honest, and inspirational middle-grade novel about finding your inner hero, from the author of Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie.

In sixth grade, bad things can happen to good kids. Bullies will find your weakness and jump on it. Teachers will say you did something wrong when really you didn't mean to do anything wrong. The kids who joke the loudest can drown out the quieter, nicer kids.

Maverick wants to change all that. One of the last things his father left him was a toy sheriff's badge, back when Maverick was little. Now he likes to carry it around to remind him of his dad - and also to remind him to make school a better place for everyone...even if that's a hard thing to do, especially when his own home life is falling apart.

The Secret Sheriff of Sixth Grade is a story about standing up for yourself - and being a hero at home and in the halls of your school.

I used this book for a summer project for school and I had already read a different book but decided that it didn’t have any sentences that stood out or made me think, “ Hmm I should apply that sentence to my life.” Like when Mr Overbye’s sign said “ Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” When I write my one pager I’ll remember how it made me cry and how I can make differences by showing love and kindness to those who need it most. Great book!❤️

The way just words made me cry!

This is a good story for middle schoolers and elementary schoolers.
This is also a bit educational for teaching kids about bullying and its effects.

SUCH A GOOD STORY

I teach this story in my English 6 class, and the kids love it—even my reluctant readers! It’s the right mix of heartwarming, relatable, funny, and sad. The kids laugh, gasp, and truly enjoy it. Highly recommend!

Love :)
