About this listen

CNN’s chief national security correspondent reveals the invisible fronts of 21st-century warfare and identifies the ongoing battles being waged - often without the public’s full knowledge - from disinformation campaigns to advanced satellite weaponry.

The United States is currently under attack from multiple adversaries - yet most Americans have no idea of the dangers threatening us. In this eye-opening audiobook, military and intelligence expert and seasoned reporter Jim Sciutto traces the expanding web of attacks that together amount to an undeclared but deeply dangerous war on America.

With in-depth reporting from Ukraine to the South China Sea, Cuba to the earth’s atmosphere, unprecedented access to America’s Space Command, and new information from inside the intelligence agencies tracking election interference, Sciutto draws on his deep knowledge, high-level contacts, and personal experience as a journalist and diplomat to paint the most comprehensive and vivid picture of a nation targeted by a new and disturbing brand of warfare.

America is engaged in a shadow war on multiple fronts, with multiple enemies. The practitioners include America’s most familiar adversaries: Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. But unlike conventional warfare, these conflicts are conducted in the shadows, with no formal declaration, and often use multiple sources, from influential businessmen and lawyers to hackers. And it is happening today.

But America is adapting and fighting back. In The Shadow War, Sciutto introduces the dizzying array of soldiers, sailors, submariners and their commanders, space engineers, computer scientists, and civilians who are on the front lines of this new kind of forever war. Intensive and disturbing, this invaluable and important work opens our eyes and makes clear that future war is here.

Timely and Important

This book succinctly articulates arguably the most important challenge facing the U.S. and NATO in the next decade. The author also outlines a few practical steps the U.S. and NATO should take in response to non-kenetic threats posed by adversaries. If anyone in the U.S. still doubts that Russia and China are the main geopolitical foes of the U.S., this book should erase that doubt.

Deadpan comedy at its finest!

Haven't laughed so hard in years. The author perfectly parodies a tone-deaf, technically and ethically illiterate cold war-era catspaw of the military industrial complex. Just the sort of character that would have played a supporting villain in a 90s film.

Should be mandatory for people who are dealing with geopolitics

According to my own experience, most people think about global politics from their own perspective. In the Western Hemisphere, we are used to think, all problems should be solved via diplomacy and talking. Even though this is an understandable democratic approach, we have to learn to think like our adversaries. And even that term will make many liberals and progressives quite uncomfortable. But the truth of the matter is, even if you’re on a peace mission and disarmed, if someone is hostile and armed, you won’t succeed by talking him out.

Having spent my life in the military as well as Eastern Europe for quite some time, I know that Jim Sciutto describes the threat pretty accurate. And honestly, as more you know, as worse you sleep. The space war was still somewhat new to me, I did not know how hostile this environment has become, particularly because during the Cold War it was considered more or less neutral. But at that time, we had a balance of power. And we as Americans and Europeans were aware that there are systems who wish to destroy us. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, this scenario went black; people stopped thinking in terms of war and enemies. But it was never true, the entire intelligence world sensed it quite early, back in 2008 as the Georgian war occurred.

Considering myself a progressive in many aspects, I am afraid, most Democrats are still thinking that we are the aggressor (that was part of the Soviet Disinformation since ‘Nam) and that we should follow a non-interventional ideology. To me, that sounds like ‘I don’t care, if somebody rapes my neighbor.’ NATO still provides us the major guarantee for peace and security and even though I understand that most people dislike the idea of an arms race, in a world that General Gerasimov openly declared as in a constant state of war, even without official declaration, it’s not the kinder one who wins, but that one who is capable to defend himself. Liberty and democracy will vanish, if we do not defend and protect them. And this includes modern warfare technologies.

I hope, people will eventually wake up and understand the truth of the old word that states: Ci vis pacem, para bellum. If you want peace, prepare for war.

Frightening aggression by Russia & China

Excellent book. It is frightening to come to an understanding about the aggression of Russia & China on the ground, under the sea in space and in cyber space.

Very intriguing!

This is a well written story about a very scary reality. More Americans should read this to open their minds up to some of the things China and Russia are doing to maneuver themselves ahead of the US in many ways. Communism/Socialism are very scary ways of life. Thanks to the author for documenting his experiences and sharing them. Very well done.
