About this listen

Sigrid is a Shield-Maiden who yearns to break free of the restrictions of her father’s home and join the Sworn Men in an actual raiding expedition. When a small diplomatic party that includes members of the Shield-Brethren lands at her family’s holding on Göttland, the party’s second in command, Halldor, sees in Sigrid a vision of beauty and power that might challenge - and even destroy - many men.

And when bloody chaos ensues at a nearby Viking fishing village, Sigrid proves she has more than mere talent: she has Vor - the fate sight - an astonishing focus in fighting that sets her apart from nearly all who have ever lived and puts her in the rare company of the finest Shield-Brethren.

But as Sigrid and her family confront her otherworldly ability, will it prove to be a gift to be celebrated, or an affliction to be cured?

Great Story, we need more

What made the experience of listening to The Shield-Maiden the most enjoyable?

Hearing the making of a Shield Maiden and her connection to the Vor (sp?) was incredible. And I believe the authors emphasized the way in which it effected those who had known her a long time. The short story emphasized the things it needed to and yet dwelled on the parts that it needed to to get the weight of the moment across.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Shield-Maiden?

The moment when Sigrid and the Sheild Brother (his name escapes me) fight. The interplay between her and him is very well played out.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Mary Robinette Kowal?

I certainly would if the story had a female main character. My only issue was that it was hard to hear male voices from Mary Kowal. I have the same issues with males reading female parts. Its certainly heavily dependant on the listener.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I definitely felt some of the sadness Sigrid felt when her family became afraid of her and nearly cast her out. It pulls a person right into it.

Outstanding

Great story and excellent narration. Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish and I will definitely be looking for more books in the series.

Missing Neal Stephenson.

Short story trying to flesh out a great Mongoliaf character. Not a whole credits worth for me.

Not loving the voice here.

Good book but I thought the voice actress wasn't a great fit for the theme of the book. She spoke too proper of English for me to fully get into it like I normally do. She does great work, I've listened to her many times before. I just thought they should've chosen a more accented actress for a viking theme.

A story about Marysue...

I enjoyed the Mongliad series but this story is just predictable. The girl boss is touted as a Marysue early on and I am tired of such lazy writing. The Narrator is ok.
