About this listen

When a storm reveals a mysterious cave behind a waterfall, the young mystic’s apprentice and her wolf investigate. Inside, she discovers a secret place containing a pile of human bones and the young girl makes what could be a fatal mistake.

In this Legends of the First Empire prequel, we witness the events that helped shape the woman who would one day become Suri the Mystic, the first Rhune Artist, and a hero to a generation.

Good preview, unsatisfying story

This one felt a little too short and lacking conclusion. Unless you read the main books a lot of the terms would be left unexplained, so I'd think you'd be even more confused.

If you've read the series, this is a nice free addition.

If you haven't, check out some of the author's other free titles first. Those a more self-explanatory than this one, so not only do you get a sense of his writing style, but also a complete story.

Wonderful, and Creepy, Short Story

This is a wonderful short story to introduce new listeners/readers to Sullivan's writing. As a fan of his Riyria books, I went in with high expectations and they were met. Makes me look forward even more to getting to reading/listening to the rest of the Legends of the First Empire.

P.S. The bonus excerpt from the first book in that series is a wonderful, horrible tease. Need to make more time to read/listen now...

modern story of telepathy/ alternate history

I bought this without a lot of expectations, just looking for some entertainment and something new. tired of the dark and dreary in my usual sci-fi.

it turned out to be very enjoyable. I acclimated to the narrator and found her very talented. I did think the main character was written as a little too snarky for my taste - but I'm a grown-up, and maybe some aspects of this book are tailored for a younger audience.

great listen!

Nonsense

Just not my genre. I tried. The narrator was excellent. If you are into this wizard & monsters fantasy stories then you will probably enjoy it. I just couldn’t get into this book.

Pile of Bones

This is the first book I have read by Michael J Sullivan and enjoyed it very much. I rated the story “4/5” because I feel that the ending was too brief and needed to be expanded a little, especially the last last couple of paragraphs. I do look forward to reading more by Mr. Sullivan. Tim Gerard Reynolds narrated the story wonderfully.

Not my cup of tea.

Don't care for the writing or narrator. don't think either is exactly bad, I just don't care for it.

Well worth it for the price (it's free)

I have never read (or listened to a book by Michael J. Sullivan before. This short story, as well as a preview of the first book in the series serves well as promotional material. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and now I guess I'm gonna have to go get the first book.

Cutting the yard.

Michael J. Sullivan has some excellent free shorts to introduce you to his writing and the great narration of Tim Reynolds. Without such shorts like Professional Integrity, I may never have found the enjoyment Michael Sullivans stories have brought me. But what I liked the most of this short was the history of how his writing came about and his commitment to providing extra value for his readers. Enjoy your trip into the world of Michael J. Sullivan and the great narration of Tim Reynolds.

The author rambles on for a long time at the start

At the start of this audiobook, the author starts rambling, talking about why he wrote the book, why he's such a great author, how great all of his fans are, how great his other books are ....

On and on and on. When he got about four minutes into listing all the awards won by Tim Gerard Reynolds, then talking about the Audie awards and how prestigious they are, I finally gave up.

Long, long commentaries belong at the back of a book. They should never be put in front of a short story,
