About this listen

When Runnel leaves his mountain valley to head for the great city of the water mages, he has no idea of his own magical talents. But he soon finds that without meaning to, he complicates and then endangers the lives of everyone he comes to know and care about. For when it comes to magic, there are rules and laws, and the untrained mage-to-be must be careful not to tap into deep forces and ancient enmities. Otherwise, other people might end up paying the price for his mistakes.©2008 Orson Scott Card (P)2008 Blackstone Audio, Inc. Classics Fantasy Fiction Magic Users Wizardry City Short Stories

I certainly enjoyed the book. The audio reading was well performed and well recorded. I liked the characters and I was mildly intrigued by the magic system that it developed. I did not give it 5 stars because it very obviously is an introduction to a series. While it had a main plot with a resolution, and some character development, it was only a taste of what the main series would contain, and I dislike these kind of primer short stories. While the magic system seems a little different than others (I am not terribly well read, mind you), it doesn't seem nearly as interesting as other magic systems I have read over the years. I felt like my time could be spent on other books instead of continuing on to the main series. YMMV.

This doesn't have the feel of the young person seeks their fortune and discover something miraculous about themselves template. The magic in it is also very unique and the only thing I have encountered like it is The Last Airbender. If you like to Enders Game and enjoy fantasy, you will love this!

Unique!

Short but very well written story. Card expertly creates a fantastic world and characters to shape it.

Fantastic book excellently preformed.

I have enjoyed the series and, while this is stand alone, I enjoyed this too. I just wish it was much longer

way too short.

Fun Story Expertly Read

This story brings to life a young boy who quickly discovers that he is more than he ever expected. The quick pace does not take away from the character development and by the end you feel like you know Runnel.

I have not listened to the other books in this series.
