About this listen

The instant national best seller

The standout memoir from NBA powerhouse Andre Iguodala, the indomitable sixth man of the champion Golden State Warriors.

Andre Iguodala is one of the most admired players in the NBA. And fresh off the Warriors’ third NBA championship in the last four years, his game has never been stronger.

Off the court, Iguodala has earned respect, too - for his successful tech investments, his philanthropy, and increasingly for his contributions to the conversation about race in America. It is no surprise, then, that in his first book, Andre, with his cowriter Carvell Wallace, has pushed himself to go further than he ever has before about his life, not only as an athlete but about what makes him who he is at his core.

The Sixth Man traces Andre’s journey from childhood in his Illinois hometown to his Bay Area home court today. Basketball has always been there. But this is the story, too, of his experience of the conflict and racial tension always at hand in a professional league made up largely of African-American men; of whether and why the athlete owes the total sacrifice of his body; of the relationship between competition and brotherhood among the players of one of history’s most glorious championship teams. And of what motivates an athlete to keep striving for more once they’ve already achieved the highest level of play they could have dreamed.

On drive, on leadership, on pain, on accomplishment, on the shame of being given a role, and the glory of taking a role on: This is a powerful memoir of life and basketball that reveals new depths to the superstar athlete, and offers tremendous insight into most urgent stories being told in American society today.

Andre Iguodala played at the U of A where I live. I am native Tucsonan and I thought he would have said a few more things about Tucson but he didn’t. It seemed like his experience here wasn’t that great and it made me a little sad. I really did like his recollection and detail of things and how he explained his emotions. I think he did a great job and I love his character.

This book is fantastic. As a die hard Warriors fan my entire life, Andre Iguodala coming to the Warriors was a huge deal. He quickly became one of the fan favorite players, and this memoir will make you love him even more! You get to experience the real personal side of Andre and all the great stories from his journey throughout the league. You also get to see the struggles and hardships that NBA players deal with year in and year out. I would highly recommend this book to anyone! It’s a very easy read and I truly, truly enjoyed it.

Such a great book! There is so much we don’t know about life playing in the NBA!

amazing insight

I enjoyed this book, which provided a realistic insight into basketball as a business. For years, I have struggled to separate my love of the game from harsh business decisions that inherent in any profession. For example, When an owner changes the dynamics of a team by trading your favorite player, it’s just business. However, when players opt to foster their best interest interests by signing with another team, they are often vilified. Where is the equity is this equation? This is the first book I’ve read in recent times, which does an excellent job of touching upon that truth, which has been swept under the rug for years. There are so many things I love about this book. I am especially thankful that the author narrated it, which made it far more meaningful and personal. Wishing the author much success and hoping this will be the first of many books from Andrea.
