About this listen

From iconic NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony comes a New York Times best-selling memoir about growing up in the housing projects of Red Hook and Baltimore - a brutal world Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised.

For a long time, Carmelo Anthony’s world wasn’t any larger than the view of the hoopers and hustlers he watched from the side window of his family’s first-floor project apartment in Red Hook, Brooklyn. He couldn’t dream any bigger than emulating his older brothers and cousin, much less going on to become a basketball champion on the world stage.

He faced palpable dangers growing up in the housing projects of Red Hook and West Baltimore’s Murphy Homes (a.k.a. Murder Homes, subject of HBO’s The Wire). He navigated an education system that ignored, exploited, or ostracized him. He suffered the untimely deaths of his closely held loved ones. He struggled to survive physically and emotionally. But with the strength of family and the guidance of key mentors on the streets and on the court, he pushed past lethal odds to endure and thrive.

By the time Carmelo found himself at the NBA Draft at Madison Square Garden in 2003 preparing to embark on his legendary career, he wondered: How did a kid who’d had so many hopes, dreams, and expectations beaten out of him by a world of violence, poverty, and racism make it here at all?

Carmelo’s story is one of strength and determination; of dribbling past players bigger and tougher than him, while also weaving around vial caps and needles strewn across the court; where dealers and junkies lined one side of the asphalt and kids playing jacks and Double Dutch lined the other; where rims had no nets, and you better not call a foul - a place Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised.

I never knew much about Carmelo Anthony. Bought this book on a whim, and enjoyed every second of it. The narration, by Carmelo made the book that much better.

Overall great book.

Melo has a beautiful delicate story that needs to be heard !!! We all need to stop judging people if we don’t know their stories— read this.

Being a Fan since I was young, this was a amazing peek into the early life of one of the best (in my opinion) personable athletes there is. The book takes you threw a journey of different trials and obstacles that he went threw. While also maintaining a personal connection, I’m sure many detail were left out and most situations were only briefly touch on. That being said this was a tremendous reflection and great listen. I truly hope Melo decides to continue with a sequel, because as great as it is it leaves you hanging. It’s always great to read the news and watch reports but there’s nothing in this world like someone telling there own account and story.
Anyone who has had any Obstacles in any situation and is looking for a map on how to persevere no mater what should give this a listen.
This team did a Amazing job, will be on the lookout for what’s next.
Looking forward to the wine as well.

I remember that draft day, thinking to myself....Detroit is making a huge mistake. Melo's career has been a success. I do wish this book included the behind the scenes regarding his decision to sign with the Knicks over the Heat with Lebron and DWade.

Solid story & delivery!

Melo lets us in on his life story and his journey to the NBA. I thought his voice brought another dimension to the story, it was like he was telling me about his journey in my living room. I learned so much about his life and why he is who he is. The only thing I wish is if he wrote about his NBA journey, but that will be a new book!

Loved the behind the scenes info

This was better than I expected it to be.
As a Denver native, being front row to Carmelo's arrival when he was drafted to the Nuggets, we had our own sense of hype having him as the face of our franchise like LeBron in Cleveland. Carmelo's time in Denver was complicated from a spectators viewpoint because I felt he had the ability to do and be more in his time here. However, in his time here he brought energy to the city and the Nuggets franchise that was much needed. As he's aged and matured, I respect his game, and this shed more light on his journey which makes his accomplishments even more sweeter for him I'm sure.
I appreciated the tactful and respectful way he described his family in his recollection of the past. His memories were vividly explained, with hardships highlighted in a way that let me understand his desire to give the readers the full picture without being disrespectful.
I appreciated the insight, and wish him the best in his journey as I'm sure he has more on the horizon as retirement looms.

Carefully thought out and put together well
