About this listen

There are no fish, in the future. We killed them. But it's not just the ghosts of the shoals making artist Cally Dune unhappy. Her husband has gone. Vanished, after being called up for the President's new "Training Scheme".

"Nobody ever comes back the same." Worried whispers drift through the pubs, gathering like rainclouds to drip their paranoia into Cally's mind, which is already marinaded in grief for Simon and fear about being called to Training herself.

Letting the wine flow into the places where it hurts, Cally stumbles into the arms of a clammy banker and unwittingly discovers a disturbing and painful secret. She is propelled on a journey through the dust of Africa and the hidden tunnels deep below London, unraveling the fading scrolls of the ancient Egyptians and illuminating their lurid hieroglyphics.

And ultimately towards a heartbreaking choice...to save her marriage or save her soul.

Because now there's something else at stake.

They are coming for it. And it's inside her.

Hauntingly Beautiful

This audiobook has a "1984" creepy feel to it. The narrator really vocalizes the angst the characters go through. I really enjoyed how hope and love seem to come out in the end.

Compelling story,excellent narrator!

This book is a great read for the times we are in now. I normally only listen to books when I go out for a walk and this book made me want to go out for a walk! The narrator did an excellent job and I am picky about narrators. Sometimes for me they make or break a book. Lillian’s voice and this story are a match made in heaven !

Cleverly Written/Beautifully Performed; Must Hear!

An intriguing dystopian romance tale, set in a none-too-distant future Britain, that explores post-modern relationships in a godless Orwellian society, consequences of environmental irresponsibility, controlling political propaganda, and… jellyfish? The author deploys wonderfully well-crafted wordsmithing with deliberate rhythm and clever turns of phrase that teeter at times toward an ethereal melding of prose and poetry. Unexpected alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia appear as an almost intuitive inevitable expression of action and emotion. The words - clearly labored over to deliver precise mental images and psychological impact - are nearly tactile in the reader's imagination as the story plays out on page. Yet... as much fun as this book is to read, the words truly yearn to break free from mere text, to be spoken aloud and heard "in the wild" where the true richness of the language has an opportunity to unspool and bloom and work its magic on the listener. That is why you must hear this audiobook, as narrated by the wonderful Lillian Rachel, to fully appreciate this author's artistry. Lillian's narration gives each character life and individuality, each emotion an honesty and gravitas, each setting an anchor in the story's world. Anna and Lillian are a formidable team, and I look forward to enjoying the next works from both this impressive new author and amazing voiceover talent.
