About this listen

Some doors should never be opened...

After a heart-wrenching break-up, Lauren Williams is seeking a fresh start. A work course offers the perfect escape, but when the venue's accommodation is fully booked, she's placed with an elderly couple in their spare room. It's not ideal, but Lauren resolves to make it work.

As soon as she enters the house, she feels uneasy. Her hosts seem nice, but there's something odd about them, and a locked room upstairs piques Lauren's curiosity. After hearing mysterious noises at night, she can't shake the feeling there's something sinister going on in the house.

What's behind the locked door? Who is the couple's mysterious daughter? And can Lauren even trust her own instincts?

Desperate for answers, she breaches the forbidden room, where she uncovers a chilling secret that changes everything. Entangled in a twisted web of lies, she realizes the once-kindly couple may not be who they seem.

With her safety becoming increasingly precarious and her tumultuous past refusing to let go, can Lauren unravel the truth and get out before it's too late?

From bestselling author M.I. Hattersley, The Spare Room is an unputdownable psychological thriller perfect for fans of Frieda Mcfadden, Daniel Hurst, K.L. Slater, Miranda Rijks, Iain Maitland and Harlan Coben.

Loved this story!

Just finished this yesterday. I have to say at the beginning I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. The reviews were mixed, and I wondered. It did keep my interest from the beginning but was slow to get going. At some point my interest kicked in and I started to really enjoy listening to it. It gained momentum and once it did, I was glued to it. Creepy but not too creepy. The story itself and the way it was written were good, and this narrator voiced the main character pefectly, with just the right personality and inflections. A book in this genre has to have an ending that fits, and this one did. I loved the way the ending was done. Overall one of the best in this genre I've listened to in a while.

A bit draggy

Great narrator. Slightly boring book. It’s easy to think you’d never respond to a situation as the main character in a book does and become annoyed by that, but that can be thought provoking. Despite becoming weary of hearing lamentations over ex boyfriend Graham, I finished the book.

Whiny and repetitive

Ugh, this book is short on substance and long on whiny, repetitive inner monologues from the main character...hours of..."graham is a jerk, graham broke up with me, I want graham back, why did I trust graham, why did I listen to graham, maybe I should text graham, why didn't graham respond to my text, why did graham break up with me, why cant i forget about graham, I would take graham back in a heartbeat. I think we are all pretty clear why graham didn't want anything to do with this woman.

I think we are supposed to be concerned about a locked bedroom in a guest house, but really, who cares? I was so turned off by the graham references I just wanted it to end. I hope there is a bad guy in the locked room to put us all out of our misery! Lucky Graham, he got away before the book started.
