Editorial reviews

"Authentic, taut and compelling. Brookes is the real deal." (Charles Cumming)

Publisher's summary

The stunning third novel from multiaward-nominated author Adam Brookes is paranoid, tense and spy fiction at its very finest.

In many ways, Pearl Tao was a typical American child. She spent summer days at the pool, played softball and lingered at suburban barbecues in her home city of Washington, DC. Yet she is also an academic prodigy, with a university place sponsored by a secretive advanced technology corporation.

Only now, aged 19, has she begun to understand the terrifying truth of what her role is to be. What her parents intend her to become. Pearl's only hope of escape lies with two British spies: one, Trish Patterson, sidelined in disgrace; the other, former journalist Philip Mangan, gone rogue and following a trail of corruption. Helping Pearl might be the most important and dangerous thing either will ever do.

An excellent third installment ....

This was an excellent third book in a truly gripping series of spy novels. I found it hard to stop listening whenever I started. Cannot wait for the next one...

Brilliant story, butchered reading

A shame that the Chinese language , so central to the flavor of the world of these books, is so utterly mispronounced, butchered by the reader. Seems finding a reader with some familiarity with mandarin would these days be fairly easy. Lazy choice does the book, the author and the publisher a great disservice. Regardless, a big thanks to the author and publsisher for putting these books into the world. Their stark assessment of the loneliness and deception of the IC feels honest.

Well paced and entertaining

A good read with excellent narration. I enjoyed it but found it a bit predictable. It reminds me of the first Bourne book. Overall I recommend it.
