About this listen

My heart is a kaleidoscope, and when we kiss it makes my world unravel....

Last summer, Gottie's life fell apart. Her beloved grandfather, Grey, died, and Jason left her - the boy to whom she lost her virginity (and her heart) - and he wouldn't even hold her hand at the funeral! This summer, still reeling from twin heartbreaks, Gottie is lost and alone and burying herself in equations.

Until, after five years' absence, Thomas comes home: former boy next door. Former best friend. Former everything. And as life turns upside down again, she starts to experience strange blips in time - back to last summer, back to what she should have seen then....

During one long, hazy summer, Gottie navigates grief, world-stopping kisses and rips in the space-time continuum as she tries to reconcile her first heartbreak with her last. The Square Root of Summer is an astounding and moving debut from Harriet Reuter Hapgood.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Katy Sobey immerses listeners in the quandaries of 17-year-old Gottie, who is fascinated by theoretical physics and complex math.... Sobey balances the smatterings of theory by keeping listeners emotionally connected to Gottie's memories, which she continually relives. Especially effective is the way Sobey balances the story's magical realism with the tension building over how Gottie will handle the anniversary of her grandfather's death." ( AudioFile magazine)

A very unusual YA novel w/a touch of Sci-Fi theory

What made the experience of listening to The Square Root of Summer the most enjoyable?

The narrator Katy Sobey did an great job with making each character distinct, and she was pleasantly dynamic.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I had trouble sometimes following the logic of the wormhole theory, but I don't think I would change anything.

Which character – as performed by Katy Sobey – was your favorite?

Grey as told in flashbacks was my favorite character.

If you could take any character from The Square Root of Summer out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Grey because he had such a cool outlook on life.

Any additional comments?

This was a 3.5 stars story for me. Katy's performance was 5-star worthy. And overall, I'd rate my reading experience with 4 stars. I would definitely read another novel by this author and look forward to listening to more audiobook titles narrated by Katy Sobey.
