About this listen
Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)
Seventeen-year-old Jonah Daniels has lived in Verona Cove, California, his whole life, and only one thing has ever changed: His father used to be alive, and now he is not. With a mother lost in a deep bout of depression, Jonah and his five siblings struggle to keep up their home and the restaurant their dad left behind. But at the start of summer, a second change rolls in: Vivi Alexander, the new girl in town.
Vivi is in love with life. Charming and unfiltered, she refuses to be held down by the medicine she's told should make her feel better. After meeting Jonah, she slides into the Daniels household seamlessly, winning over each sibling with her imagination and gameness. But it's not long before Vivi's zest for life begins to falter. Soon her adventurousness becomes all-out danger seeking. Through each high and low, Vivi and Jonah's love is put to the test...but what happens when love simply isn't enough?

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is 12 hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story. Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that.

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer—they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

In fifth grade my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed. It didn't take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever. For the next seven years, it was us. She's the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Wow!
Wow! My first Emory Lord book and she did not disappoint. I fell in love with Jonah and Vivi right from the start.

Tornado
This book had me showing so many emotions. It made me hate the characters but love them at the same time. It made me so confused and unable to comprehend the plot because of its complicated characters . But it also made me look at life a new way. To find joy in the hurt and to look at life in front of me instead of behind or in the future. So this book was an amazing tornado.

AWESOME
amazing take on a struggle that doesn't get nearly enough literature. pulse narrator's did a very good job of bringing the characters to life. and the author wrote a wonderful, and balanced story between two characters

it was a good read
it was narrated very well in the storyline was very beautiful but I still think it could have been happier. I'm not sure I would read any other of the author's books but this was a really good one.

A great read and audible experience
I really enjoyed this book more than I was expecting to. The performance really made the choice of audible a great experience, rather than simply reading it.
Overall the story felt very genuine. For talking about such heavy subject matter, it actually made me laugh a lot. If anyone you love struggles with the issues they mentioned, this book can really give a peek into what it's like to deal with great loss of loved ones and loss of self to the demons many must fight every day.

Great storyline, could not stop listening!
Listened with my 15 year old daughter on a lengthy car trip, we both enjoyed the story and narrators.

The manic side
When We Collided was a good read. I have to say, though, that I was a little disappointed at the end, but honestly, not all endings are wonderful. I like that it was realistic. I think the author did an absolutely amazing job of portraying bipolar disorder, particularly the manic side of bipolar disorder, when she wrote Vivi. It is not easy to portray such a strong personality, especially one that includes pretty severe bipolar behavior, but I think she nailed it. I really found myself loving Jonah and his siblings. I had a hard time deciding if I wanted to check this one out and found that it was worth it. See for yourself!

Wise and Insightful beyond their years
Any additional comments?
I just finished the audio version of "When We Collided" by Emery Lord. I'm sure it would be classified a young adult novel, but no matter to me. Very well written story of a vivacious teenage girl named Vivi (yes, I did that on purpose) who is spending the summer with her mom in a small, California coastal town. Doesn't take long to figure out she is trying to manage bi-polar disorder without meds. She quickly enters the life of a teenage boy named Jonah whose father has died and mother can't cope - he's left with his older siblings to share the responsibilities of younger siblings. Vivi is a positive force in so many ways and all goes mostly well for quite a while. She and Jonah are wise and insightful beyond their years (of course - it's a novel). It's a very well thought out story with great characters and storylines. Ultimately, it's uplifting. The audio actors, Elizabeth Evans and Raviv Ullman, were a pleasure to listen to.

Wow. This story is a feast
I'm a grandmother and I loved every moment of this "young adult" novel. It dealt lovingly with real life issues and left me with tears and laughter
