About this listen

The fourth book in the enthralling series following the fascinating lives of Beth and Alex Macgregor, their family and friends.

It is 1745 and the rebellion that the Jacobites have worked towards for so many years is finally under way. Prince Charles is in Scotland gathering the clans and they are rising, ready to fight and if necessary, die for him.

At his prince’s command, Alex, trapped by his own success as a spy, reluctantly remains in London with Beth. His clansmen, meanwhile, head north to join the rebels. Desperately unhappy, the couple try to convince themselves that their role is crucial to the cause, but hope that Charles will relent and allow them to leave London and join him. Their wish is granted, but not in the way they expect, and soon they find themselves fleeing for their lives.

In the meantime the Jacobites are gathering strength and heading south, winning decisive victories along the way. It seems that Prince Charles Edward Stuart and his followers will finally achieve their desire to regain the throne of Great Britain for King James. But the Duke of Cumberland is determined not to let his father be toppled from the throne by a bunch of heathen savages, and returns from Flanders to lead the Hanoverian army against them. Soon Beth and Alex find themselves at the heart of one of the most brutal civil wars Britain has ever seen, one which will put both their lives and relationship in danger, and which will change the history of Britain forever.

Join the rebellion of Beth, Alex, and the Macgregors as they fight for justice and freedom in the Jacobite Chronicles.

Fantastic performances

Will M. Watt's performance in this book is brilliant. When he is reading the portion of the Battle of Culloden, it is absolutely captivating. You can feel the passion and the pain from the characters. Truly breathtaking. So good.

Exciting, Heartbreaking, Wonderful!

I was hooked from the very start and on pins & needles through the book, finishing in 1 day. This next book in the series lived up to the prior 3 books, but still broke my heart a little bit. The story, the history, the characters weave together to pull you into the story! Julia Brannan's excellent research for historical accuracy is woven seamlessly with stellar storytelling for a story that has me thoroughly hooked! This book takes us to the highlands and it was a whole new facet to the story with the incredible people, family connections, customs, and the rich history. It is heartbreaking and sexy and wonderful and exciting and I very highly recommend it!!!! Two thumbs, 8 fingers, & 10 toes way up!!

Will & Rosalyn once again deliver amazing performances with flawless narration of all the different characters and accents. Will is indeed the duet wizard with this masterpiece!!

Incredible series

I knew going in that this book would break my heart. I have a keen interest in Sarah’s story, as I began with “The Whore’s Tale.” After the events in this story, I am ever hopeful Sarah will eventually get her HEA; even if only in the love of her few friendships.

I am in awe of the Jacobite men and women; tales of their bravery, determination, and loyalty are inspiring and captivating. This series is well researched and I am completely invested in the characters: fictional and non-fictional.

The narration is superb, as it has been for the last 3 books.

Excellent narration

The book was wonderful! I married a MacGregor. We are a very loving Clan! We very rarely see our Clan in a good light in books. Always the villains. Thank you for bringing the light.

Wow! Brutal, but beautifully done!

I made the mistake of reading a few of the reviews prior to writing this and I wish I had not! All I can say is that those disappointed readers clearly had expectations of a cozy romance read; the 'Jacobite Chronicles' is far from that! It is accurate historical fiction at its best! How could any accurate depiction have allowed all the characters to live through any novel that covers that particular war as graphically as Brannan does? It could not have; the loss of those beloved characters offers the emotional angst that was reality. This was Colluden and anybody who has heard of that battle knows that a major portion of the Highlander forces perished. Those who survived the actual battle were killed by the British Army afterward...very few escaped. Truth be told, I was surprised that as many of Brannan's characters escaped as they did! I breathed a sigh of relief as sad as the losses left me.

The brutality of war must be hard to write! I think the research must be grueling and to portray it as graphically as Julia did must have been an emotional undertaking. I believe we readers are lucky the battle was such a quick one. Heaven knows, the aftermath was almost as brutal for all who survived.

Again, beautiful narration by Will Watt and Rosalyn Landor. They bring the characters and their experiences to life. I am an audiobook reader and I am so thankful that the last two books in this series have now been released in audio!

Heartbreaking

The events leading up to and including the Battle of Culloden. In devastating detail the author brings to life the plight of the Scottish people in their attempt to reestablish their king to the throne of Britain.
