About this listen

Following the death of their father, Beth's brother, Richard, returns from the army to claim his share of the family estate. However, Beth's hopes of a quiet life are dashed when Richard, dissatisfied with his meager inheritance and desperate for promotion, decides to force her into a marriage for his military gain. He will stop at nothing to get his way.

Beth is coerced into a reconciliation with her noble cousins in order to marry well and escape her brutal brother. She is then thrown into the glittering social whirl of Georgian high society and struggles to conform. The effeminate but witty socialite Sir Anthony Peters offers to ease her passage into society, and she is soon besieged by suitors eager to get their hands on her considerable dowry.

Beth, however, wants love and passion for herself and to break free from the artificial life she is growing to hate. She finds herself plunged into a world where nothing is as it seems and everyone hides behind a mask.

Can she trust the people professing to care for her?

1-4 amazing 5and 6 read below

Loved these books! But listener beware: books 1-4 are narrated by the same person. Books 5 and 6 have a different female voice. Loved the first 4 books and the team of narrators. They worked really well together. The lady in books 5 and 6 sounds like she is reading a vampire novel. I may have to buy the hard copy of the books to get through the last two. The author is really good. My review is mainly of the last two books.

Very good but a little too long

I really liked the story line even though Beth drove me nuts and I wanted to shake her for being so rude to the one man trying to help her the most. I feel it was a little long and found myself thinking of other things while listening. I’d mostly focus back in with Will M watt’s voice. I actually found this series by looking for another book narrated by Mr Watt who is becoming one of my favorites. His performances are incredible with his ability to perfect different accents and have drawn me in like a moth to a flame. Ok so yeah I have a crush and actually get excited when I find another good book he’s narrated.

Outstanding!

The story is excellent and the narration so well done. The different voices that Will Watt does are so great! Hilarious at times. Amazing talent!

Outstanding story and performance

I am usually not a fan of narration with multiple voices. But Rosalyn Landor is a favorite of mine and the story description for Mask of Duplicity was so unique. I LOVED this audio book. Julia Brannan’s characters are real, funny, aggravating, sad, and entertaining. The story takes you on an unpredictable journey — What a treat to listen to. The voices were seamless, I forgot I was listening to two narrators and just got lost in the story. Yes there is a cliff hanger. If you like everything all wrapped up in the end...be warned. I can’t wait for the rest of the Jacobite series to come out on audible. Excellent job!

Loved it!

Up until her father’s death, Beth had led a quiet sheltered life taking care of her father through his illness, there wasn’t a lot of money but she and the last of the family retainers were comfortable and made do with what they could barter and trade.

All of that would change when Beth’s brother Richard returns from the army to claim his share of the family estate and Beth’s hopes of a quiet life are dashed when Richard, chagrined with his meagre inheritance and desperate for a promotion decides to force Beth into a marriage for his military gain. And Richard will stop at nothing to get his way. Beth is coerced into a reconciliation with her noble cousins in order to marry well and escape her brutal brother. She is then thrown into the glittering social whirl of Georgian high society and struggles to conform (while trying to hide her Catholicism). The effeminate but witty socialite Sir Anthony Peters offers to ease her passage into society and she is soon besieged by suitors eager to get their hands on her considerable dowry.

Set out as Beth try to discern who is friend and who is foe, where nothing is what it seems and all seem to be hiding behind masks. Who to trust? Begin the adventure into the life of Beth Cunningham, her family and friends during the days leading up to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.

This is one series I am anxious to follow, not only to see how Beth gets out from under her brothers brutal hands, but to discover the secrets behind the shocking and effeminate Sir Anthony – friend or foe?

Audible performances by Rosalyn Landor and Will M. Watt were, as usual, OUTSTANDING!

You’ll need Book2. Nice Surprise,SUPERB Narration!

This book is such a nice surprise. Good intelligent writing, historical details, great building of characters and story!

The Narration is SUPERB! I wish every book would be narrated such.

READ SERIES IN ORDER. The story develops from book to book. Get Book 2, to get some (fun) answers.
P.S you may think that one male character is overly played, but more is revealed in Book 2, and it will makes sense.

Highly recommended, Bring more in the series, please !!!

Outstanding!

I have read all 6 books in the Jacobite series. I thoroughly enjoyed them. I like historical fiction and these books did not disappoint. Then I discovered that the first in the series was on Audible. Since it's been quite some time since I've read these books , I decided to listen to this one. The book takes on a whole new dimension. The narrators were great. Mr. Watt made Sir Anthony come alive as well as the other male characters. Ms. Landorr did the female characters just as well. I can listen to Scottish accents all day.
I am anxiously looking forward to the second book coming to Audible. Julia Brannan, you are one of my favorite authors!
