About this listen

More than 40 million people consider themselves Irish American, and yet most of them do not truly understand the rich cultural history of their ancestors. From prehistoric times to the emigration of the Irish to Amerikay, this broad, yet comprehensive, history gives a general overview of the deep history of Irish Americans.

The book includes such interesting topics as the four cycles of Irish storytelling, ancient Celtic legends of shape-shifting and Fair Folk, the six Gaelic languages and their relation to one another, the Gallic Wars with Julius Caesar, the Anglo-Norman invasion, the sacred ceremonies and religious beliefs of the Druids, the real story of St. Patrick, the Great Famine brought on by British involvement, the mass exodus of Irish to America, and the struggle for Irish Americans to rebuild their lives upon new soil, in an unwelcome land.

Just incredible.

I’m so grateful to have found this book and I’ll be sharing with my O’Neills and O’Rourkes, the Collins and Clarks, McGraths and Skellys and Whelans!! It’s had a really big impact, and I love that it was researched and written by a woman…

Great Listen

Perhaps a bit heavy on "ancient" history for my taste, but very well done and enjoyable.

A very enlightening read...

I enjoyed this book immensely, even when I didn't. The history of what the Irish went through is brutal. But they not only survived, but thrived in America after many years. I'm so glad I found this book. If you are the least bit Irish you probably will be too.

Book review

Excellent story, factual information which I have found in other sources. My father was a 1st born American Irish. The speed of the book was too slow but I was able to adjust it

a fine accumulation

as the afterword says, this interesting book is a gentle accumulation of information. Well put together, well narrated, 'Irishly' lyrical and pleasant listening.
my Irish in America began shortly before the Revolutionary War. A different famine and different motivation, but here we are.

I absolutely LOVE this book!!

My father always told me that we were scotch Irish. I did my DNA on ancestry and it showed I was 57% Scottish 11% Irish but I still claim Irish ancestry. This book really humbled me and there was so much information on my Ancestry. I had no idea of all of the suffering that they did, at the hands of Britain. Recent years, I have been watching the queen, the new king and queen and thought my feelings were OK over there actually liking the British honestly after I heard this book, my heart has changed. I’m so mad at Britain for what they did to my ancestors in Ireland. It broke my heart to hear how they were run off their country and meant to be lesser of a human being in Britain’s eyes. I have always told my family we were Irish, and I will continue to learn even more about Scotland and Ireland the home of my ancestors !I am a proud Scottish Irish American.

Very interesting read

Im glad I got through the mythology at the beginning and stuck with this book. Many interesting revelations about Irish and Irish American history. I plan to listen to the famine part again with my husband before our trip to Ireland because there were some astonishing facts I did not know.

Wonderful and well told story.

I enjoyed the early chapters all the way up to when the English brought a lot of sadness and pain to the Irish. The Irish emigrants made a wonderful contribution to the many nations who welcomed them and the result was well told! Thank you,
