About this listen

As a 2-year-old, Helen Keller was stricken with a mysterious illness which left her blind and deaf. It wasn't until she was 6, and a teacher, Miss Sullivan, entered her life, that she was able to communicate with her family. In her unforgettable autobiography, Helen shares her struggle with, and ultimate triumph over, her disability. When it was first published in 1902, her story gained the attention of some of the most famous people of her day and it was later popularized by the stage play and movie The Miracle Worker.

Editorial reviews

This program reveals the timelessness of Keller's autobiography. Her courageous spirit her greatness never becomes out of date. As the program opens, the listener can hear the frustration and sadness in Bresnahan's voice as Keller struggles to express herself to those outside her dark, silent world. Like a sigh of relief, the narrator recounts Keller's joy when her instructor, Anne Sullivan, breaks through the communication barrier. In a refreshingly modest manner, Bresnahan tells of Keller's remarkable academic achievements and her indebtedness to friends and mentors. Her passion for literature rings clearly in the narrator's blissful tone when addressing this subject. Those looking for an uplifting listening experience will find it here.

Beautiful & Encouraging!

The literary beauty found within Keller's words are astonishing! Additionally, as a full-time college student with ADHD a homeschool teacher, mother of 3, one child having ASD, and wife to a husband diagnosed with Asperger's & ADHD at age 34 this book is incredibly ENCOURAGING! What I am trying to say this book will encourage ANYONE WHO HAS INTELLECTUAL OR PHYSICAL DEFICIT! This book will give you the courage you need to PERSEVERE!

Great book!

The Story of My Life was an interesting book! Helen Keller was really good at reading and understanding people for being blind and deaf. She had to learn at a very early age to manage her being blind and deaf. This book is an autobiography showcasing her ability to read and communicate with others. She was a very inspirational person. She has inspired many people to never give up and always keep going. I gave this book four stars because autobiographies aren't my favorite type of book but other than that it was a very good book!

A wonderful story, but...

Any additional comments?

The prose is wonderful and artfully performed, however the audio cuts out repeatedly and does not have Helen's letters written between 1877-1901 which comprise 100 plus pages of the published book.

Amazing

This is the best book I have read in a long long time. I am so uplifted by Annie Sullivan and her selfless service to Helen Keller. Likewise Helen Keller stands out as one of the most gracious, intelligent, curious, determined human beings.
Everyone who has the ability to read or to listen must take it vantage of this book.

Inspiring!

The Story of My Life is an inspiring book that I think is an important book for anyone to read. Helen Keller faced huge challenges in her life as a result of an illness that left her both deaf and blind when she was only 3 years old. She was surrounded by family and friends who helped her find a teacher, Anne Sullivan, who helped her achieve the goals of learning about the world around her and most importantly learning to read and write. I learned so many interesting facts about the experience of being deaf and blind and I am fascinated by her perseverance and her capabilities. I definitely recommend this book!

Truly one of the best books I've ever experienced.

Her poetic wit is unlike anything I've ever heard. Her story is amazing. the way she tells it is vastly more powerful. I wish I had a voice like hers.
