About this listen

When first published in 1989, The Story of Wine won every wine award in the UK, and the USA. It is widely regarded as Hugh Johnson’s most ambitious and enthralling book. Writing it, according to Hugh, was like trying to get "a quart into a liqueur glass". It is not just one story but a collection of many, scanning the wine world from Noah to Napa, from Pompeii to Pomerol, as illuminating to our understanding of civilization as it is to our appreciation of wine.

Chronicling the making, merchandising, and drinking of wine through millennia, this new edition is fully updated to include Johnson’s view of the evolution of wine over the past 30 years. As historian Andrew Roberts says in his foreword: “The genius of The Story of Wine derives from the fact that it is an adventure story, full of mysteries, art, and culture."

An Interesting Story

It is very good if you are interested in the history of wine. It does come across as a lecture throughout due to the sheer amount of information. The author occasionally skips around in time which makes it difficult to know where we are sometimes. Overall I did enjoy the book.

Fascinating and in depth

It is a must for anyone interested in the timeline of wine. Incredibly detailed to the point that there might be a need to brush up on european history of european monarchies, wars and power struggles.

The worst narration that I’ve ever heard

The book promises to be good, however, the narration is terrible and makes it difficult to continue to listen. I had to stop after 15 to 20 minutes. The narrator seemed to be short of breath and him taking deep breaths between sentences was was not really a distraction, but also disrupted the continuity of the story.
