Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Uniting universal themes with a wonderfully personal vision of the world, Hans Christian Andersen found magic in the landscape of childhood. His talking animals and living toys shine a sparkling light on the strange wisdom of innocence and the deceptive nature of adulthood. These stories have now been adapted into countless classic films (including The Little Mermaid, The Red Shoes, and Frozen - which was based on “The Snow Queen”) and have become part of our everyday speech, such as when we talk about “ugly ducklings” and “the emperor’s new clothes.”

Along with Wit, Charm, Health, and Courage, Princess Amy of Phantasmorania receives a special fairy christening gift: Ordinariness. Unlike her six beautiful sisters, she has brown hair and freckles, and would rather have adventures than play the harp, embroider tapestries . . . or become a Queen. When her royal parents try to marry her off, Amy runs away and, because she's so ordinary, easily becomes the 14th assistant kitchen maid at a neighboring palace.

Lark Rise is Flora Thompson's childhood memories of a north Oxfordshire village, the people who lived and worked in it, and a way of life that has totally disappeared. The story is built around Laura and her brother Edmund, through whose eyes are seen 'old Sally', whose grandfather built the house she lived in before the enclosure of the heathland, children's games, the interaction of village and gentry, and the way in which the seasons governed life.

Story
The story opens on the first sledding day of the season, and all of the children in town are out in force. Our hero and heroine, 13-year-olds Jack Minot and Janey Pecq, go down a particularly treacherous run and are both seriously injured. Over the next year, Jack and Jill (as she is called) are nurtured back to health by their widowed mothers. As the seasons pass, we become intimately acquainted with not only Jack and Jill, but their group of friends.

Story
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Christmas Tradition in our family.
Many years ago my sister and I listened to this story. every year while putting up our Christmas tree. Now we each play the story in our own homes and our children are doing the same. It always brings back wonderful memories and feelings!

Story AND Tchaïkovski's Music!
Wonderful introduction to both the classic story (abridged) and the classic music (for the ballet). This was exactly what I was looking for - music and story.
My only complaint is that the sound quality is not great. Sounds like an older production. But still worth getting!

A childhood favorite
I used to listen to this every night in December leading up to Christmas as a kid, this just fills with me nostalgia and is the best retelling of The Nutcracker you can find. Claire Blume is an excellent narrator and the music is perfect.

This version is over 40 yo and is still the best!
I used to check this out at my local public library. Very nostalgic and superb use of Tchaikovsky's original score. Don't waste your money or credits on the other versions. This is the Nutcracker you've been looking for.

Pitchy
There were times the narrator was just too silent, then the music would play and I'd have to turn the volume back down. And her Ohs and Ahs sounded borderline inappropriate.

My nightly bedtime story from childhood
I got this on cassette tape when I was a young child, probably 7-8, in the 80’s. I listened to it almost every night to fall asleep for years, so much that I wore out the tape and I was devastated. To find it again so many years later and still remember almost every word was just such a lovely find, it genuinely made my heart soar. This is and will always be my favorite telling of the Nutcracker story.
