About this listen

The Subjection of Women is an 1869 essay by the English philosopher and political economist John Stuart Mill, based on ideas he developed jointly with his wife Harriet Taylor Mill. At the time of its publication, the essay's argument for equality between the sexes was an affront to conventional norms regarding the status of men and women.

In his autobiography, Mill mentions his indebtedness to his wife and her daughter Helen Taylor for the composition of the essay. Mill contended that the emancipation and education of women would have positive benefits for all people; the companionship of equally educated persons would result in the greater intellectual development of all.

By emancipating women, Mill believed, they would be better able to connect on an intellectual level with their husbands, and that relationships would thereby be improved.

A logical approach to a topic marred by insanity

There is an abundance of extreme opinions, regulation and movements regarding this topic. In the midst of this sea of insanity there is a steady rock from the past that uses logic and reason to address the issue. A refreshing change from the concurrent discourse.

The emphasis

The voice of the story was really hard to understand because of the narrator’s choice of words to stress.
