Publisher's summary

The start of a brand-new epic fantasy series from fan favourite Ian Irvine, set in the world of his million-copy-selling View from the Mirror series.

The Merdrun, cruel warriors blooded by thousands of years of slaughter, are gathering in the void between the worlds. Their long-hidden summon stone is waking, corrupting good people as well as bad and turning arcane places into magically polluted wastelands. If it is not destroyed, it will create a portal and call the Merdrun through.

In a nightmare a nine-year-old girl sees the Merdrun leader - and he sees her. If her parents, Karan and Llian, are to save their daughter and their world, they must find a way to stop the greatest warrior in the void.

A family in pursuit by many antagonists

I regret that I was unable to finish even half of the story. The plot was a bundled mishmash of mini-plot arcs made tedious by important, yet unknown, backstory as to how the MCs family became entwined in the machinations of the their pursuers. It was as if the author started with a rough draft of the story but never outlined it in detail beforehand. Then, proceeded to write the story by adding one conflict and confrontation after another in a wing-it-as-they-go fashion; throwing in a conflict here, a confrontation there then a bizarre intrigue over there, all in an unguided fashion. This had the effect of making all of the characters seem like pieces on a checkerboard, moved this way and that to make a maze-like dash to reach some nebulous goal. However, in doing so, the author made all of the characters and their roles terribly uninteresting.

The narrator did a good job with the story he had to work with.
