About this listen

In The Texas Spirit David M. Smith has written a series of spirited and insightful essays about the chemical industry, events and personalities in his life, and his views on trends in the national economy and other aspects of American life that concern him.

David is the quintessential Texas entrepreneur, lover of Texas history, and skilled teller of the colorful twists and turns of his own success story as it intertwines with the growth of the state's petrochemical industry.

He is an ardent collector of Texiana and owns over 20 large locomotive train bells from the glory days of Texas steam engines. David's entrepreneurial bent, zesty style, folksy humor, and unabashed candor are all combine in this admirable example of the Texas spirit.

Began Well, Didn’t Follow Through.

The first several chapters held my interest as one of the books about real Texans I’ve come to enjoy. However, his editor did him a disservice, because the latter third of the book meandered through a treatise on religion, followed by a self-congratulatory exposition on his chemical business. Neither held even the least humor nor detail sufficient to warrant the investment of time required to finish it. I rarely write anything that is not a positive review. Save your time on this one, or only read the first half.
