Editorial reviews

This preschool pastoral from Astrid Lindgren - she of Pippi Longstocking fame - teaches children about the vast, timeless beauty of nature. The tale concerns a tomten: a nocturnal, elflike creature from Scandinavian folklore, said to watch over the fortunes of farmers. No human has ever seen the tomten, although his small footprints may be spotted in the morning snow. Rather, the tomten flits about under the night sky, communing with barnyard beasts in his "silent little language" that only animals understand. In humble, soft-spoken hues, prolific children’s storyteller Owen Jordan lends a soothing sense of timeless wisdom and tranquility to these moonlit meanderings. At once omnipresent and elusive, immense yet mysterious, the mythical tomten stands as a metaphor for our own relationship with nature.

Wonderful “Asatru”-friendly book

This book is absolutely adorable as a hard copy. Big pages with beautiful images. It has a quaint, folksy, simple life feel to it, which alone is great. But then it’s about one hidden folk, in a childlike-wonder and mystery, like a cute secret.

The audio book is so well done. It’s got lovely music. When the author is reading from a page you get to see the page which will change to the next one when he reads from the next one, if you’re looking at the app. This can be so great to keep your child’s attention when you need that without sticking them in front of a crazy kids tv show.

Not hurdles

Just a tale of observation, no challenge, no problem solving, no real highlight. The reading is very good and makes a few comments of a tale to seem great than it is.

Short but sweet

I enjoyed this on a rainy night when the power went out - atmospheric, a little bit creepy, but in the end, comforting.

The sound is mesmerizing

I generally dislike music added to audiobooks but in this case, the slightly spooky music is quite evocative of the ancient legend of the sleepy Swedish farm with its Tomte troll in this version written by Astrid Lindgren, creator of Pippi Longstocking. The five year old is mesmerized too. I think we'll have one appear on solstice yes?

Fabulous!

I love that Audible has pictures displayed with this book. This one is hard to get a hold of and I’m still waiting on Amazon to find me a copy and mail it. Having this version on audible is a perfect solution. My five year old and I enjoyed it together.

Our daughter loves this book.

Great story. Our daughter falls asleep to this in the car and we listen a couple more times as she sleeps.

Where are the pictures?

We've been slowly going through and buying the books in the With Synchronized Images category. This one was placed in that category but doesn't show any illustrations other than the cover image - I wish we could get the illustrated audiobook version or exchange it for one that has pictures!

Sweet Winter Story

I enjoyed this story because it feels like winter. I'd recommend reading this to small children before bed.
