About this listen

Buried for nearly 300 years and now brought triumphantly to light by Dr. Livesey, this is, at last, the true story of what happened on the fateful Treasure Island....

The truth about Captain Flint and his fabled death.

The truth about Long John Silver and his coveted wife.

And the truth about Jim Hawkins, that double-dealing turncoat of the first order: the traitor of Treasure Island.

John Drake trained as a biochemist to post-doctorate research level before realising he was no good at science. His working career was in the television department of ICI until 1999, when he became a full-time writer. John's hobby is muzzle-loading shooting, and his interests are British history and British politics (as a spectator), plus newspapers, TV news, and current affairs. He is married with a son and two grandchildren.

Critic reviews

"If anyone ever makes another film of Treasure Island, the producers should hire John Drake to write the script." (Historical Novel Society)

"Simply an excellent book.... The authenticity is palpable, the story engrossing, the characters completely human. Of the many spin-offs that Treasure Island has inspired over the years, this one truly stands out." (James L. Nelson, author of The Only Life that Mattered and Fin Gall)

"A novel and refreshing take on a classic...instantly captivating with a well-crafted plot that definitely keeps the pages turning." (Alaric Bond, author of the Fighting Sail series)

Part National Lampoon or Wicked (the play) retelling of the Classic Treasure Island as written by famed historical seagoing novelist Patrick O’Brian. Not only faithful but convoluted rendition of the revered classic but also a satisfying satire without violating the spirit of the tale

A faithful and hilarious reimagining

The original Treasure Island is one of my favorite books. This imagines the same story, but with Jim Hawkins basically as a little Sh.t If you take this book with a sense of humor, you will not be disappointed. I have read and enjoyed most of the treasure or pirate books out there, and I really enjoyed this modification of the classic story. I was laughing out loud at some of the sections.

Hilarious retelling of Treasure Island

This version is a offensive to the original story! I will not give spoilers, but it is a total betrayal of established and well loved characters. John Drake has taken Robert Louis Stevensons beloved classic and bent it over a barrel.
