Publisher's summary

A young governess arrives at Bly, a country home in Essex, England, to care for Miles and Flora, two precocious and pure children. But as ghostly visions take shape, the obsessively protective governess soon fears for the safety of her wards - only to wonder if these hauntings are a conjuring of her own imagination.

In challenging what we see - and what we believe we see - in the dark of the night, The Turn of the Screw stands as one of the boldest and most chilling ghost stories ever told.

AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Ideal for anyone who wants to read a great work for the first time or rediscover an old favorite, these new editions open the door to literature's most unforgettable characters and beloved worlds.

Well Read Classic

Beautifully narrated, and I love the ambiguity of the story, but I found the governess such an unlikable brew of naivety, arrogance, and unmotivated assumptions that I couldn’t become invested in the outcome. I kept hoping the children would drown the governess in the lake so we could all be done with her. I couldn’t figure out if we were supposed to find her a ridiculous drama queen or if it was the fault of the author in continuously having her make sweeping declarative assumptions about one detail or the next without a scrap of evidence or experience to explain her conclusion and weakly prefacing so many of her actions and decisions with “I don’t know why I did [fill in the blank]”, “I couldn’t tell you why I blank”, I couldn’t say why I then blank”......
I know it’s a classic but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect.
I loved the ambiguity and the ending. I just detested the governess.

A classic well read

this is one of those books that I had already intended to read but never got around to. So I decided to try it as an audio book and listen to it in the car. the performance of this book is excellent, and only bogs down a bit with the pros of Henry James. James was rather verbose and descriptive and sometimes and that got a little bit in the way of the story. if you've ever tried to read the story and haven't gotten through it, I strongly suggest that you give this audio version a try.

Absolutely terrible. I just Did NOT GET THIS AT ALL

Ok first off; those who know me know I’m a fanatic when it comes to books. I’m obsessed with reading; I never EVER go anywhere without my kindle, book, and/or hardcover depending on what I’m reading or tablet if I’m listening (I do both; listen and read a story at the same time.) Yes; I have two different platform e-readers plus I also do hardcovers plus When I’m in the car I skip to where I left off and do audible.
NOW THAT WE’RE PAST THAT....
This book was awful. I never walk away from books; I can count on one hand how many times I’ve abandoned a book once I started. I tried three times to get going in this book. Third time I really tried. After making it to the second chapter I truly said what in gods name am I reading? Countless times I had to re-read passages because I literally had no clue as to what I was reading. Listen I’m no dummy; but I just can’t do this. My mind is actually exhausted. For those that love this book; kuddos to you folks. This is my humble opinion obviously and don’t knock anyone for trying it. But I just found this book to be awful in every way. I’m already over it. Please do not let this review discourage you from trying; however if asking my advice; might wanna just skip this one. Terrible.
