About this listen

The best of Colin Wilson in one fantastic volume.

Containing extracts from Wilson's work on existentialism, criminology, psychology, and the occult, this is an invaluable introduction to one of the late 20th century's most incisive thinkers.

This is a new edition of the classic Colin Wilson collection The Essential Colin Wilson (first published in 1985), updated and introduced by Wilson's bibliographer Colin Stanley. It is the only book to contain extracts from Colin Wilson's most important work in one volume, including The Outsider, A Criminal History of Mankind, The New Existentialism, The Occult, New Pathways in Psychology, and Mysteries, as well as three of his novels and many other texts.

Subjects covered include existentialism, criminology, psychology, consciousness studies, the occult, and much more. This second edition includes all of the original volume plus six essential post-1985 essays and chapters chosen by Stanley and other Colin Wilson experts including Gary Lachman. These essays provide a much needed update covering aspects of Wilson's work from the 28 years that followed the publication of the first edition to his death in December 2013.

This is an invaluable introduction for those approaching one of the late 20th century's most incisive thinkers for the first time and also a timely reminder, to Colin Wilson's many fans and scholars worldwide, of a unique and challenging body of work.

Colin Wilson sought the feeling of fascination and didn't waste it. This is a wonderfully arranged and aptly narrated showcase of the thrills that Wilson put to paper while pondering philosophy, art, artists, psychology, poetry, fiction, the paranormal, the occult, and the whole incredible human journey. It does justice to Wilson's massive oeuvre, and sounds as if it's being read by the writer himself, though in actuality Wilson spoke with gravity and care, rather than the infectious enthusiasm that makes listening to this audiobook a complete pleasure. Enter the world of the man who posited Faculty X. Wilson's enjoyment of writing and contemplation, and of life and mystery, will rub off on you.

Exhilarating Voyage

Colin Wilson makes his position very clear on any topic that he chooses. He is not afraid to take his explanations far afield He is clear on every issue. I really enjoy reading all of his books.

Colin Wilson's philosophy should be tought at schools helping children understand, that they lifes really matter. This collection of various writings, gives wide initial perspective of his ideas and was, at least for, me to deepen my readings of CW.

Loaded me with optymism and gave new joy of life

Colin Wilson gets 5 stars, this review is about this volume as an editorial project. I suppose a book of excerpts is always going to suffer some repetition and discontinuity. That's fine. For a writer with such a reputation, and with hints at some omitted writings and areas of focus , this seems like a pretty poor summary, If this is somehow "ultimate" it speaks poorly of Wilson. Why, for instance, lengthy speculations on subjects that have been amply superseded by general knowledge of our time. There's not all that much about mysticism, consciousness, and existentialism. Maybe this is about inducing sales of other Colin Wilson titles. It worked, I might just do that. But seems like a bit misleading to suggest the reader is getting something comprehensive or even representative. Other than that, the reader at least sounds like Colin Wilson looks.

Great Thinker, OK Compendium
