About this listen

Judge Richard Quinn is young, idealistic, and honest to a fault. That's why he's handed the most sensational homicide case in Oregon history. Locked in a race for the U.S. Senate, Ellen Crease gunned down the intruder who murdered her wealthy husband. In a single, brutal instant she became a widow, a victim, and a hero.

Yet disturbing questions remain. What secrets did the man who started his fortune running mortuaries keep that might have cost him his life? What about the son frozen out of his will? Or his wife's political enemies? And what about Ellen Crease herself?

Soon it becomes clear that a deadly plot of murder, blackmail, passion, and double cross is unfolding around Judge Richard Quinn. And unless he breaks the rules, justice will not only be blind, it will be the final victim.

Better to read this book

I love Phillip Margolin's books. Unfortunately, the narration in this audiobook almost ruins the book. It was a real struggle to get through - thankfully the storyline was good!

Read the book, forget the audio

What didn’t you like about Eric Dawe’s performance?

Mr. Dawe read in such a monotonous tone that I could not finish listening. I read this book in 1998 when it was first released and it made me an instant fan of Phillip Margolin. I have either read or listened to all of his books as a result of reading this book. I decided to go back and listen to the book since it has been 15 years since I read it. I have listened to over 100 books through Audible and this is the first time I can remember where I stopped listening because of the narrator. I was seriously disappointed.

Any additional comments?

This is a very entertaining book and well worth the read, but I couldn't listen to it.

Ugh ... the narrator.

This is one of Margolin's early books and wasn't his best (I love most of his books) but the narrator RUINED this story and made it almost impossible to finish. Dawe does the silly female voices, dumb male voices, is staccato and sounds like he is reading poorly, rather than performing. I won't be able to buy other books by this narrator.

I really enjoyed this audio book. This author keeps your attention and you can count that there is always a twist to the story.

An interesting tale

I liked the story, especially the twists and turns. But the reading (audio) performance was not great, and in my opinion detracted from the story.

Good storyline, hard t keep characters straight

I really enjoyed this book. The storyline is engaging plenty of twist and turns lots of characters. I had to have my own little grid to keep track of all of them.

Another case of narration ruining a good story

I loved the story line and probably would have been more involved in the characters if the narration wasn't so whiny and poorly read. If Jay Snyder, Lou Diamond Phillips or another narrator who had acting skills and a better delivery narrated this book, it would have been so much better. Sadly, another case of buy the book or don't bother.

The Undertakers Widow

Good story with lots of twist & turns and while I was fairly sure I knew the real culprit wasn't totally sure until almost the very end.

A quick, uncomplicated good read.

What did you love best about The Undertaker's Widow?

Mystery

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Develop the characters with more interaction between them and not make the plot so predictable.

What aspect of Eric Dawe’s performance would you have changed?

Some of the voices were too over-the -top.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Laura and the Judge reunite.

Any additional comments?
