Inspired by a true story.
A young, ambitious lawyer is eager to prove he is better than the mobster-dominated family he grew up in. Working as a Bronx Legal Aid attorney, he learns how to twist the system, how to become an unbeatable defense lawyer. But it's 1982. The Spiderman rapist is on the loose and New York City is a city in fear. When an outraged victim commits suicide right before his eyes, searching for absolution and determined to prove his client's innocence, he knocks the pegs out from under the prosecution's case.
Digging deeper, horrifying revelations about his family's past collide with the true identity of the sadistic sociopath behind the real Spiderman's rampage. In the process, this good lawyer comes face-to-face with his greatest conflict and deepest fear: to win, really win, must he sacrifice every principle he believes in and embrace his family's mafia past to become judge, jury, and executioner?

The "family duality" the lawful kid walking a tight rope with his unlawful kin is done well. It's a bit predictable but not so much it detracts from the listen.
The ending satisfied my Schadenfreude itch.
It's a trip back in time, the story takes place in 1982, which means everyone is looking for a pay phone or leaving messages. I found myself chuckling at times over this. Not because I found it humors, it was chuckle worthy since there a few gens out there they won't have a clue how crazy it could get trying to track someone down in 1982.
You might HAVE to go sit outside their apartment to find them.
You might HAVE to leave messages at five different places.
If someone wanted to fall off the radar, they could!
Oh good times, good times, ha ha.
The narrator did a great job with every accent, cadence and inflection for everyone EXCEPT the "Little Italy" crew. How crazy is that? Not a deal breaker, just struck me as odd how he did seem to almost play to stereotype for everyone but the "home grown NY Italian".
The romantic realtionship part of the story tho, is clunky and just annoying. It's like the author thought he needed some kinda of a romance hook in here to get a trifecta going on.
Overall it's worth it if you can grab it on sale.
Sometimes..... a full five stars
