It's a story as old as time. Boy likes girl. Girl will only date...a superhero. And unfortunately for Dave Murphy, Grand City is chock full of superheroes. In fact, in Grand City ANYONE can be a superhero, which gives Dave an idea...
The plan was simple:
- Pretend to be a hero and save the girl from a fake mugging.
- Live happily ever after.
The plan was foolproof, nothing could possibly go wrong, even with Dave choosing his temporary superhero name from an empty, discarded soda can. The one named after a retired superhero...who finds out someone is impersonating him...soiling his good name.
Now Dave has to be the hero and get the girl before the real hero comes to town and breaks his legs. See, a story old as time.

In a world where superheroes exist, how does a an average guy make an impression on a girl?
Option 1: Be honest, put themselves out there and own being who they are?
Or
Option 2: Come up with a convoluted plan to save the the girl from a fake mugging?
Our protagonist goes for the second option and hilarity as well as heroics with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. This novel is an adaption of a comic book but it really holds its own.
I've read a lot of comics and graphic novels over the years. I am an avid superhero fan. This story plays with familiar tropes without ever feeling tired or predictable. The story was thoroughly enjoyable and the jokes fly fast and furious. This is a self contained original story but the ending definitely sets up the potential for new stories from this world and I would welcome them.
Joseph Baltz does a great job delivering punchy dialogue and keeping the story moving forward. He narrates with energy and vitality.
This book is appropriate for teens and up. There are no issues with language violence or sexual content.
Any fan of superheroes with a sense of humor will enjoy this tale.
