Publisher's summary

"On day 16, the symptoms either begin to subside, or the patient suffers a massive seizure and expires." (CDC Outbreak Update)

When Cal Bohannon went to work on Friday morning, he felt the world was teetering on a knife’s edge, but what he didn’t expect was a microscopic enemy rapidly spreading south of the border.

New to preparing for disasters, Cal’s family, along with a small band of friends, will have their survival plans tested as the fragile threads of society quickly unravel around them.

Can the fledgling group come together in time as the authorities scramble to gain control over the sudden contagion and hysteria?

What if the virus isn’t their biggest problem, but just the beginning of something much worse?

Great Beginning

I enjoyed this audiobook so much that I was able to finish it in 1 day! The first 3.5 hours is prepping. So if you hate a book with a lot of prepping, this isn't for you. I thought the author did a good job and didn't make the prepping parts like reading stereo instructions. The outbreak story line was described and detailed very well. One part that I loved was when a character called his friend "Sergeant York"! I've never heard him referred to in a book before, other than a book about him, and I thought it was pretty cool! (I'm from very rural Pall Mall, where Sgt. York was born, raised, lived and buried.) I really enjoyed the book and the narrator did a superb job! I can't wait for book 2.

Decent

What makes this a decent post-apocalyptic story are the characters (which are many, some nonchalant in attitude) and the narration. I enjoyed the hospital scenes and has humor at times and as the H1N2 virus spreads and military action for state to state .It may not be the best book but still enjoyable and as with all series ending is abrupt. Recommend if you like post-apocalyptic. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you

Good Start to a Post Apocalyptic Survival Series

The Unraveling was an enjoyable PA survival story. There are a lot of characters and have to say I enjoyed most of them and their interactions with each other. The story begins during the early stages of a new Flu pandemic that is very deadly. At first nobody really knows what is going on and it is taken very seriously by most. It follows Cal and his family as he starts hearing some troubling news reports about the flu and other things and thinks he should get him and his family more prepared. He gets together with friends and other like minded people and they begin to make plans and prepare to help each other out in the event of a disaster. Of course the disaster still catches them somewhat unprepared and the surviving and fighting for their life begins.

I found the story pretty good and was entertained throughout but I did have some issues with it. For people that were very interested in being prepared they really dropped the ball on some things and in my mind were a bit slow to react to certain situations but I guess hindsight is 20/20. There may also be some right leaning opinions at play but it could just to fit with some of the characters and situations and is not that bad anyway.

The narration by Andrew Wehrlen was great, I have heard some other books by him and have always enjoyed everything he has done.

Overall I would recommend this story for anybody that likes PA survival stories and this was a solid start to the series and left off at a point where you really want to see where things are going.

Enjoyed it in just one day.

Likeable characters, good storylines, and a solid cliffhanger to boot. If you're into the post-apoc/survivalist genre, then add this to your list.

Prepper's Primer?

The story started out slowly. It seemed more of a prepper’s primer than a chronicle of the apocalypse. We were educated with food, supplies, and terms relative to surviving a disaster. There was also background and introduction to characters which of course is helpful. A virus similar to the flu spread into the United States from Mexico becoming a deadly pandemic. Our family of focus is in central Florida. We follow the Bohannan’s; Cal, Charlotte, and Amber along with several friends as they bond together to form a self-supporting community. The virus takes its toll. As the country loses workers it sets off a devastating domino effect on the nation. City services, utilities, transportation, and food shelves all become scarce. Survivors wonder how long this situation will last. Maybe it’s time for the Bohannan Clan to move on; to look for more secluded and safer surroundings? Unashamed hook to the next volume. The Unraveling

Enjoyed the book. I believe the author was very timely or prescient in some of the events that take place in the story line. I enjoyed the narrator so much that I have started another series he narrated called Roark.
His cadence is good and voice inflection isn’t a burden for the story line. He doesn’t out read the story he just takes the take.

The Unraveling

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I did find the story a little bit uneven.Nevertheless, I am intrigued enough to continue the series once more books are produced. No complaints about the narration. He is one of my favorite narrators and I enjoyed his performance thoroughly. I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Finally a post apoc prepper book that has the characters ease into that lifestyle! A realistic storyline and character development. Heading over to look for the next book!

Maybe I should start prepping

This book makes me think about being a prepper. I like that it starts at the beginning of the outbreak showing how quickly everything falls apart. The scenes showing how quickly the hospital is overrun with patients is the most interesting. Makes you wonder how many medical and emergency personnel would finally abandoned their jobs to be with family. The narrator did a great job. He added a lot to the story. I’ll be adding the next book to my wish list.

Good info in a building story!

First, ALL chapters ARE in order. The "Just So-So" review by DCgrits is not what I heard. The story has perfect continuity. (Whatever issue must have been fixed.) This isn't a war story...yet. But there is plenty of action. It's a paced build up through the realization things are getting bad and will most definitely will get worse. Good practical info is weaved in. And as end of the world tales go, stories like this involving illness and disease are truly the most likely...and most frightening!
