Publisher's summary

While on assignment in Paris and Venice, an American journalist works desperately to expose communist espionage activities.

Fenner burned Rosenfeld’s message, reminding himself wryly that he was behaving in the very best tradition. This was a game not too difficult to learn, he thought. A game? A game in deadly earnest. A vacation in Venice that was grim business. A girl constantly beside him who wasn’t his. How the hell had he walked into this upside-down world? Where, he wondered suddenly, would Venice lead?

So glad Helen McInnes' novel are audiobooks!

Helen McInnes' well crafted political suspense novels, with the fascist and communist villains and damaging propagandist lies, are surprisingly relevant today and a satisfying listen. I look forward to the release of more titles and hope the publisher continues to choose good performers.

Below average narration

This is one of my favorite Helen MacInnes novels. The story is Milne is wonderful, and though written in 1963, the political aspect is relevant for the current climate. In the hands of a different narrator, it would’ve been terrific.

This narrator is unable to do “accents”. The English, French, Russian and Italian accents sounded the same, with a high-pitched voice and accent of hitherto unknown origin. The American accent was correct.
