About this listen

Over 400 years before Columbus "discovered" the New World, it is believed that someone else already had - Icelander Bjarni Herjolfsson. Over the years 985-986, Herjolfsson was attempting to reach Eirik the Red's colony on Greenland when he was blown off-course. He sighted a coastline covered with woods, and thus was the first to glimpse a piece of North America. This fascinating collection includes the complete "Greenlanders' Saga" and "Eirik the Red's Saga," as well as selections from "The Book of the Icelander" and "The Book of the Settlements." Also included are commentaries on sailing techniques, and historical and cultural background.Public Domain (P)1990 Recorded Books Americas Classics Fairy Tales Fantasy Fiction Literary History & Criticism Medieval Sagas World

Excellent!!

My only complaint is the audio quality but since it was obviously recorded a few years ago, that’s excusable.

Good narration, but hard to follow

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, because its more authentic to the original narrative and gives you good side info. I was required to read this, so if your into this stuff, more power to you, but for me it was hard to keep up with and kind of boring. Some of it was really funny and relatable, though.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Add a written character description list. There were to many people with similar, if not the same, names to keep straight. Plus many of them occurred in more than one of the tales. Also, I would reduce the number of narrators. Deats or Guidall, pick one.

What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?

He was informative and his voice was just as hot as always. He always reminds me of James Q. from Braun's books. Although, most of the reading was done by Deats.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The childishness of some of the characters made me laugh.

Any additional comments?

If you use this version and expect to retain a lot of the info, then get a written version as well for reference.
