About this listen

Ever since her emergence as a child prodigy Isabelle Bryant has only ever known one love - her violin. Then, aged 32, at the height of her career, the unthinkable happens. What do you do when everything depends on the dexterity of your fingers, only to lose them in a horrifying instant?

Devastated and vulnerable in the aftermath of her accident, Isabelle struggles to find new meaning in her life. Her perilous path of self-discovery leads her to Vienna, the historic city home of her musical hero, Beethoven, and into the arms of the man who will become her lover.

As her personal journey progresses, she takes on new opportunities and has to face disturbing revelations, all of which have the power to make her or break her – all over again.

The Virtuoso is a novel of mainstream fiction exploring life, love, passion and pathos. If you like strong female characters, an emotional roller-coaster ride and unique twists and turns you won't see coming, then you'll love Virginia Burges's touching tale of tragedy, music and redemption.

The Virtuoso comes with an official sound track performed by Adelia Myslov: https://youtu.be/8C92OvwT8Ks

I wanted very much to like this book, but couldn't get there. Perhaps, if I had been led to believe it was more a romance novel than mainstream fiction as the ad says I would not have gotten the book. When I think of novels revolving around music, I think of Vikram Seth's "An Equal Music" where romance and music intertwine in an artful form. The prose in "The Virtuoso" was not on this level. I do not like writing negative reviews, not at all, but in this case, I feel I was a bit misled. Others, I'm sure, may disagree. The sample was not representative of the book. This is usually not the case with Audible. I feel for the narrator. I think she made the best of it.

Wanted very much to like it, but...
