About this listen

From Sandie Jones, author of the Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick and USA Today best seller, The Other Woman, comes an addictive new domestic suspense audiobook about a wife, her husband, and the woman who is supposedly her best friend.

The Wife: For Alice, life has never been better. With her second husband, she has a successful business, two children, and a beautiful house.

Her Husband: Alice knows that life could have been different if her first husband had lived, but Nathan’s arrival into her life gave her back the happiness she craved.

Her Best Friend: When Alice met Beth, her best friend, it was the icing on the cake. A friend without judgement, to celebrate with, commiserate with, Beth is the most trustworthy and loyal person that Alice knows. So when Nathan starts disappearing for stretches of time, Alice turns to Beth. But soon, she begins to wonder whether her trust has been misplaced....

Revenge

Do you really know the people closest to you? Alice finally has her life back on track. The death of her first husband destroyed her. That was years ago. Now she's married to Nathan. He's a supportive husband and a loving father to her two girls. Alice has it all. Or does she? Sadly she can't forget Tom. Is that why Nathan is cheating? He denies it. I wasn't sure. Why would someone plant false evidence. I understand that revenge can be a powerful motivator. I was glad that Alice had a best friend to confide in. Beth doesn't judge. I trusted her until I heard her life story. I could understand Beth's desire for revenge. I was shocked by how the lives of these people were intertwined. The story shocked me. I couldn't put this book down. Sandie Jones wrote a book filled with greed, betrayal and revenge. The characters were complex and their true motives were hidden behind a facade of civility. The dialogue was sharp and to the point. The ending took my breath away. The twist was unexpected. The First Mistake was an entertaining thriller. The narration by Nathalie Buscombe made the characters come alive.

Mixed feelings

I found Alice to be stunningly slow in connecting the dots, however I generally liked the twists and turns of the book: I thought I had it figured out then I didn't, then I did again..
The book is fine, but if you have to choose go with the author's previous novel "The other woman".

Just okay - predictable - great narration

This book was just okay. Nothing too exciting not much for twist and turns. Very predictable. Great narration!

A surprise ending!

This book started out a bit slow for me. I liked it, but there seemed to be much of the main character’s thought patterns that turned me off. She was so weak and addicted to alcohol and medications that I lost respect for her. The ending was VERY exciting! If the book had been like this from the beginning, I would have given it a five.

Disappointing x 2

I listened twice. First time I was lost. Probably a different narrator for the 2 women would have been helpful. 2nd time I picked up some of the details that made the twists make sense but generally, it just didn’t make it for me.

Marylou

Overall I enjoyed this book. I thought it was a bit slow moving until Part 3. I was pretty sure I knew where it was going and then suddenly, I was wrong! I enjoyed the way the characters evolved and was glad I read it. So many reviews are full of reports of “twists and turns”, as a good thriller should be and this was a good one.

I received an ARC of this book and have given my honest review.

Fast-paced and suspenseful

I enjoyed all the twists and turns of this character-driven story. Although it started a little slowly, I soon became so involved that I hated to stop listening. Definitely worth the credit!
