About this listen

A world without evil is all Queen Arlena has ever known. But when an ominous pentagram appears in the sky, her innocent days of blissful court life, playing politics with other races, and daydreaming of marrying the stoic elven prince Talen come to an abrupt end.

When an eerily familiar phantasm warns her of the imminent collision of a parallel world ruled by an ancient sorceress, Arlena must confront the true nature of not only her own world, but her very existence. Calling a company of legendary dwarven warriors forward into her time, Arlena and her allies must brave a world they are completely unprepared for in order to save their own. Will the naïve Queen and her companions be able to stop the invasion without being forever changed in the process?

This was a twisty, unique book! I really enjoyed it. There are a lot of fantasy races and creatures, plenty of mysteries to unravel, and some fascinating relationship dynamics. The very end felt a bit abrupt for my tastes, but maybe that’s just because I could’ve read more about these characters. :)

Unique and fun!

I met the author on Instagram and, once I saw the cover of this book, wanted to read it. I was curious about the audio version and decided to give it a try. The author and voice over artist put a lot of work into making an entertaining listen. It was a very pleasant experience and interesting story. I liked the concept (which I won’t share in an effort to avoid spoilers) and truly feel the author has enough of a foundation to expand on the story.

It took me a couple of tries to get into this story. After about 2 hours of not being able to follow along, I gave up for a … week or two? No idea, I don’t remember. I came back to it a day or two ago. (I have no sense of time). It wasn’t long before I found myself hanging onto every word. It’s full of elements I absolutely adore such as time travel, parallel dimensions, reincarnation. I want to be clear this isn’t a time travel story, it’s difficult to elaborate without spoilers.

It’s a pretty slow burn, it takes a while for the plot to get where it’s going. It’s a cozy fantasy which that makes a great story to relax to if you’re listening to it as I did. The story revolves around a hundreds of years old conflict which makes for perfect prequel material. I love fantasy and I just desperately want to know more about these characters. I have a physical copy as well and I can’t wait to re-read it and take my time to just absorb everything about this universe.

The narrator is incredible, she has a beautiful singing voice. There was one instance of repeated dialogue in the audiobook, but other than that, the audio was perfect. There were instances of sound effects, but they were few and far between so they seem out of place, but I appreciated them regardless.

Unfortunately, I can’t say what I want to say about this book. I try to avoid spoilers in my reviews but this is just one of those books I wish I could talk about all of the plot points, twists and reveals that I love.
