Thalia knows three things:
Her first name.
That she barely escaped the clutches of the Septori with the help of a mysterious stranger.
And that her run-in with the Septori's iron butterfly machine did something to her. It changed her into something neither fully human nor Denai.
Fearing her inner darkness and seeking answers to her past, Thalia finds refuge as a servant at the Citadel in Calandry, a school for the gifted Denai.
When strange powers awaken within her she is forced to pretend to be one of them and goes from being a servant to a student overnight. Her life becomes even more complicated when the handsome stranger who saved her from the Septori becomes her new fighting instructor.
Thalia knows that the Septori are still looking for her and they will stop at nothing to get her back - dead or alive.

Let’s start with our heroine, Thalia. Sis wakes up in a medieval dungeon lab like it’s casual, with absolutely zero memory but full access to sarcasm and survival instincts. If Jason Bourne was a sarcastic YA girl with a death wish and a fondness for punching her problems, this would be her. I wanted to wrap her in a blanket but also give her a helmet, because danger follows this girl like a caffeinated raccoon.
Now, the boys in this book? They’re like if Hot Topic hosted a Hunger Games. We’ve got mysterious brooding types, flirty sword guys, and someone who literally throws knives for fun and maybe therapy. Thalia’s surrounded by so many emotionally unavailable hotties, I started shipping her with a nap.
Also, let’s talk about the world-building: imagine Hogwarts, but if everyone was trying to murder you and your only elective was “Advanced Escaping.” I didn’t know what a Dravinian was at first, and by chapter seven I still wasn’t sure, but I felt it deep in my soul. The vibes? Immaculate. The logic? Missing, but in a whimsical way.
And the romance? It’s slow burn, but more like a fire started with wet matches and zero communication. You’ll scream “KISS OR KILL EACH OTHER ALREADY,” but in a fun way.
Final thoughts: this book is like if a Disney princess got dumped in a torture dungeon and decided to thrive. I don’t know what just happened, but I want book two and maybe a juice box.
⭐ 4.5 out of 5 stars. Would recommend if you like:
• Surviving trauma with snark
• Mild-to-severe kidnapping
• Men who sigh dramatically in the shadows
• Female leads who have absolutely had it
You’re not reading The Iron Butterfly. You’re being dragged through it by the ankle—and weirdly, you’re into it. 🦋✨

started listening, I was dissatisfied. The reader makes Thalia seem so much more whiney and annoying! I kept switching back to reading every chance I could to avoid the irritation. Thalia has been through a lot of horrible things, but she is also fierce and determined. I hope they use a different reader for the next book!
Love the story, hate the narrator!
