About this listen

A short story collection from New York Times best-selling author Cixin Liu. The title story, "The Wandering Earth", was a blockbuster international film, currently streaming on Netflix.

These 11 stories, including five Chinese Galaxy Award winners, are a blazingly original ode to planet Earth, its pasts, and its futures. Liu's fiction takes the listener to the edge of the universe and the end of time, to meet stranger fates than we could have ever imagined. With a melancholic and keen understanding of human nature, Liu's stories show humanity's attempts to reason, navigate, and above all, survive in a desolate cosmos.

There were lots of interesting ideas that I’ve never heard before. The book contained several stories, but I wasn’t entirely clear if they were all happening in the same universe and timeline or in alternate universes. Some of the stories had clear tie-ins to other books by the author. Overall, I thought it was enjoyable. The narration was good as well.

Fun stories about deep topics

The relatively short and separate stories in this book explores few new intriguing themes you come to expect from Cixin Liu, but also many that seems to be precursor (or probably reused) concepts jn the 3 body trilogy.. still worth the time investment in it.

Great Cixin Liu but not 3 body problem epic..

This is some great science-fiction. So creative an inventive yet science based. It makes me dream in wonder about the future.

Fascinating stories

What an incredible journey through all the stories. I like how some of them connect. I enjoyed every story. The stories that I thought started off slow or I thought I was getting bored with ended up finishing magnificently. The stories that started off interesting kept that some power thru out. 5/5. I wonder if Cixin Liu is the best hard sci fi author of all time.

Beautiful thought provoking stories

I had read Cixin Liu's The Three Body Problem and I had loved it, so I really wanted to read this book, but after seeing the movie "The Wandering Earth" on one of the streaming sites, I assumed that's what this book is about, and I was not interested. Recently however, a friend told me that I was wrong, that despite the names being the same, this book was not the same as that movie, so I hesitantly decided to give it a try. I am so thankful to the friend who convinced me to read it! So many gems from The Three Body Problem reappear here in different guises and different contexts which along with his unique philosophical depth make the stories in this book unmistakably Cixin Liu, and the book a wonderful Cixin Liu collection. If you liked The Three Body Problem, you will enjoy this as well; and if you enjoyed this book, you will love The Three Body Problem.

A great reencounter

Highly original and interesting stories with many twists. Good narration too. Chinese take on social issues was a nice bonus.

After the "Three Body Problem" trilogy, I wasn't sure Cixin Liu could "do it again."

But he did! Or he has. Whatever!

The short stories in "The Wandering Earth" explore and playfully play with all sorts of big ideas in ways that pull the reader in and expand the imagination.

Be prepared: This is not your well-trodden Anglo-Saxon SF. But if you are open to non-Western perspectives and modes, dive in and drink deep!

Be prepared, too, to laugh out loud at times. Cixin Liu's humor is exquisite, as when he is a character in one of his own stories.

Not sure why some reader-reviewers did not care for the narration. For me, the narrators' voices fit the stories and characters well.

In short, uncertain that any author could rival earlier masterpieces, "The Wandering Earth" exceeded my expectations, and then some.

Enjoy!

It was a lot of fun listening to great mind-stretching ideas from an eastern point of view! His take on technology and society are truly original.
