About this listen

This is a story so gripping and so authentic that its popularity has grown over generations. It is more popular now than it was when first written.

It was 1898 when Wells crafted his seminal tale of grotesque tentacled Martians and their terrifying tripod fighting machines commencing their invasion of Earth from a landing site in a sandpit at Horsell Common, southwest of London. It is a suspenseful, entirely believable account of how one man and his family react and survive amidst the initial incredulity, and then the awakening terror, panic, and despair that overtakes millions of Londoners as the Martians slowly advance.

The Hollywood blockbuster War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise was based on this novel. However this audiobook is not associated with the movie. This audio version is completely faithful to the H.G. Wells novel.

Boring

This book is interesting in some places and has a good overall idea, however I felt bored throughout the whole thing. The voice actor is decent but unless you like a guy slowly describing his recollection of what happened during the war, you will probably be uninterested in the rambling of the main character and his POV and interjections of knowledge he was to find out. The most interesting character doesn’t pop up till the last third, though I really enjoyed the back half of the book more. Overall I can see why the have tried to retell this story a couple times but I wasn’t really hooked.
