About this listen

When Alice tumbles down, down, down a rabbit-hole one hot summer's afternoon in pursuit of a White Rabbit, she finds herself in Wonderland. And there begins the fantastical adventures that will see her experiencing extraordinary changes in size, swimming in a pool of her own tears, and attending the very maddest of tea parties. For Wonderland is no ordinary place and the characters that populate it are quite unlike anybody young Alice has ever met before.

In this imaginary land she encounters the savagely violent Queen, the Lachrymose Mock Turtle, the laconic Cheshire Cat and the hookah-smoking Caterpillar, each as surprising and outlandish as the next. Alice's adventures have made her the stuff of legend, the child heroine par excellence, and ensured that Carroll's book is the best loved and most widely read in children's literature.

Editorial reviews

This much-loved classic gets a fresh and youthful approach from narrator Shelby Lewis. Alice tumbles down a rabbit hole in pursuit of the White Rabbit and finds herself in topsy-turvy Wonderland. Lewis gives Alice the right balance of curiosity and spirit as she encounters various strange creatures, experiences extreme changes in size, joins a mad tea party, and faces off with the Queen of Hearts. Lewis uses extravagant tones and variations in pitch and accent to flesh out the characters' eccentricities, and listeners will definitely revel in her vivacious performance.

I couldn't finish w/ the narrator

She might be ok with something else, but made Alice sound extra whiny and annoying. A British narrator would also be nice. I tried but couldn't finish.

Great Nonsense Stories

Watching Disney’s Alice in Wonderland is one of my comfort movies, with the Cheshire Cat as my favorite character. These two stories the movie is based off of give me almost the same enjoyment.
I tend to listen to this at bedtime for my own bedtime stories.

Just couldn’t get into it

By the time I started getting into the meat of it I was completely disinterested, narrator was fine and was colorful enough but the story just dragged and dragged. Possibly I’m too old for a first read.

Best!!

As an English learner, this is one of the best audiobooks that I’ve ever listened to.
I don’t understand why some other people are complaining about this audiobook, particularly being narrated by an American when they must’ve tried the sample.

Performance makes Alice sound like Dorothy.

Too much whimsy in every sentence Alice speaks, as if each statement is a question.

Great

My sister (6) wasn’t very into it but for this story to be a good one you have to be a little more mature but I love it the narrator did great it was just splendid.

Classic. Relisten often

Very Good reading, clear and cleanly pitched. good character voices, even a cockney for Tweedledee/dum. She can’t go deep for males and some sibilance seeps in.
Life and language is so ambiguous to a child, even more to precocious Alice as she tries hard to be proper. I know of no other literature that provides such insight into a child’s world view. I like to rehear episodically to interrupt modern “rabbit hole” thought patterns.
Scarlet Johansson narrates just the first book separately in Audible Plus and it’s magical. Her voice has a timber or quality unmatched here. I wish she read more children’s or fantasy books.
