Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

This remarkable novel begins in 1850s Louisiana, where Gilda escapes slavery and learns about freedom while working in a brothel. After being initiated into eternal life as one who "shares the blood" by two women there, Gilda spends the next 200 years searching for a place to call home. An instant lesbian classic when it was first published in 1991, The Gilda Stories has endured as an auspiciously prescient book in its explorations of blackness, radical ecology, re-definitions of family, and yes, the erotic potential of the vampire story.

Story
I’ve made my mark and proven my loyalty to a man, a city, and a way of life. That loyalty has provided me with all the spoils of success. For the longest time, that hasn’t included a woman at my side. There is only one beauty that can bring my untapped desire to life. I shouldn’t have opened the door. Cracking open the stone and striking the flint is my doing. What follows is hers. With something so intense, will this spark lead to a blazing inferno? Will we make it out of the ashes before everything I hold dear is ravaged?

Lots to like!
This book was really interesting and captivating. The story itself jumps back and forth between modern day U.S. and Renaissance Portugal. The premise is pretty cool as two lovers separated by time find their way to each other and try to fulfill their mission to help save planet earth. I really enjoyed it! Narrator did a good job portraying different characters.

Unique and Interesting!
This book is part historical romance and part sci-fi romance. Really interesting storyline. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but this story jumps between Renaissance Portugal and Contemporary U.S., with aliens for good measure! I found the story compelling and engaging. The author really seems to do her research when it comes to authentically describing 16th Century Portugal. I really enjoyed the historical spotlight on a country that doesn't get a lot of attention in Western popular fiction. So I LOVED that.
The narrator was really good at using Portuguese pronunciations for names and locations. The attention to detail was really impressive. She was also highly emotive, which I liked.
It's a unique book. I really liked it. Between the plot and the narration, this one's a winner.

love through time
Captivating, riveting, engaging, and suspenseful. I was drawn down through the rabbit hole quickly on this one , and I loved every moment of it all. The flashbacks to the past truly made me appreciate their present day story and connection. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job bringing it to life.

Recommend And Not Finished Yet But…
I’m liking this audiobook a lot. I’ll update the rating once I finish but…one flaw I’m noticing which writers sometimes do that is a pet peeve of mine is that Victor and Veronica are “too perfect”. Give your characters a few flaws next time. It will make them much more interesting and relatable. I would recommend this book though.
