Publisher's summary

Marvin Hamlisch got his start as a rehearsal pianist for Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand, and went on to co-create A Chorus Line, write the Oscar-winning musical score for The Way We Were, and win many other awards for the music he wrote for the stage and screen. Hamlisch is one of only a handful of people to win a Grammy, a Tony, an Oscar, and an Emmy.

In this revealing autobiography, written in partnership with noted freelance writer Gerald C. Gardner, Hamlisch tells the story of his childhood, his marriage, and his friendships with stars including Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, and Groucho Marx. The autobiography paints a nostalgic and intimate picture of Broadway and Hollywood.

After his death in 2012, Barbra Streisand made a tribute to him in her appearance on the 2013 Oscar broadcast. This book includes moving words from Hamlisch's many celebrity friends during the memorial service held shortly after his death.

One of the best I’ve heard.

Robert Klein does a wonderful job. Such an interesting and inspiring life Hamlisch led. I couldn’t stop listening and polished it off in less than 3 days. I wish he had sprinkled some of his personal life into the first 11 chapters as I worried about him and his love life; it became a distraction. He was truly a genius I knew very little about. Beautifully done.

interesting life

I was pleased in an unexpected way by the autobiography of Marvin Hamlish!
First of all, I've been a big fan of Robert Klein for years and he is a pleasure to listen to... coincidentally, I got to see Hamlish conduct songs from They're Playing Our Song with Robert Klein and Lucy Arnez singing, just a few months before Hamlish died! This entertaining Bio brings all the pieces together!

Delightful!

This was a wonderful book with an excellent performance by Robert Klein! Bravo! Robert played Marvin’s character in the Broadway show, They’re Playing Our Song. I saw it way back when. It was a full circle moment having Robert read this book. Thank you!

music

This the second book in 40 days that I read, that mentioned QUINCY Jones.
I enjoyed this story. It brought back memories from my viewing of Chorus line. His explanation filled in some squares.

Terrific!

I highly recommend this book for music, movie and theater lovers. Marvin was a true genius and his sense of humor brings so much humility to his gift. Bravo!

Infectious told and illustriously narrated…

Infectious told by the late, but eternally masterful, Marvin Hamlisch and illustriously and honorifically narrated by the one and only, Robert Klein (who ironically portrayed Hamlisch in Marvin’s and Carole Bayer Sager’s tony-winning musical, “They’re Playing Our Song” with Klein and Lucille Ball’s daughter, Lucie Arnez…

Music to my ears!

Marvin narrates his biography in great detail. I loved hearing about his relationship with Barbra Streisand and Carol Bayer Sayer. The stories of his youth were also wonderful to hear about. What a talent!

A Lovely Read

It was so interesting to hear about his early childhood and how his early mental disposition influenced his decisions way up into later adulthood. He writes honestly and with a lot of humor. From the heart he expresses his highs and painful setbacks. One gets a real picture of who he was.

The narrator was excellent!
