About this listen

In 1668, hangman Jakob Kuisl, his daughter Magdalena, and her husband Simon are traveling to the town of Bamberg. But what was planned as a family vacation soon becomes a nightmare: there is a murderer in Bamberg leaving the severed limbs of victims in the trash outside the city. When rumors quickly spread that the murders are the work of a werewolf, Jakob Kuisl must prove the superstition wrong and embark on a search for the "devil of Bamberg". This thrilling fifth entry in Oliver Pötzsch's Hangman's Daughter series follows the continuing adventures and mysteries that surround the Kuisl family.

Interesting murder mystery based on true stories, as the author explains at the end.
There were some things that seemed off, as when one of the characters wished another to have a nice rest of their day doing... (somewhat paraphrased here) which surprised me, but looked it up & there's actually IS nothing new under the sun!
Also in looking this up, found historical references to one of the actual executioners of Bamberg Germany in the Middle Ages. Fun!!!

Thoroughly Entertaining & Historically Correct!

..and this story, while fiction, relates that inhumanity to one's neighbors & family due to the superstitions that were all too prevalent in those fearful days.
Good story, well told, I was surprised by ending.
I'm going to check out his other books.

History is violent...

I bought the first book on a fluke and loved every minute. Since then, I've listened to the whole series, and passionately awaiting the next issue.

Worth more than a single Credit.

This novel is based off facts. It is fanticnating. They have documentations of werewolves all over Germany and Bavaria. They had many witch trials. I am suprised at all the killings and cruelty. Witch trials were common. There are are torture museums in Italy but not for children or people weak of heart.

Scary Werewolves

Started reading these books because the first one is about a midwife -- and that is my own profession, so a topic I can always enjoy. But I kept reading because the writer truly transports you to old Bavaria and immerses you in the culture, superstitions and history. His take on family life, politics, professional pride and religion hit home despite the span of centuries. This one doesn't disappoint and I hope there are many more to follow.

Love these books!

Any additional comments?

This was the first book of the series that I listened to (having read the previous four). Really enjoyed it -- and did the equivalent in listening terms of staying up til 2 a.m. reading. The narration was very good -- just one quibble over the pronunciation of "Bamberg." There were a few inconsistencies in the plot (or maybe the translation) but they were minor and did not detract from the story. Looking forward to the next installment.

Great addition to the series

having grown up in Bamberg, I enjoyed this book solely on its location. but the story was suspenseful, entertaining and I couldn't wait to find out how this book ended. also, the historical back frond of the story was highly interesting. after finishing this book I ordered the other 4 books in the hangman s daughter series on CD so that I can listen to it on my daily drive to work!

great storytelling
