About this listen
Fun City is run by corrupt officials and respectable gangsters wallowing in luxury mansions in the hills high above the harbor, the beach, and the neon jungle. When vice worker Tammy is found mutilated on top of a pool table, an effete pervert, and son to the 1970s pin-up beauty queen once known as The White Flamingo, is locked up. Can Detective Joe Dylan find The Killer before he becomes one of the hunted? The White Flamingo is a break-neck neo-noir crime thriller from beak to tail feather.

Composed in the last years of Roberto Bolaño's life, 2666 was greeted across Europe and Latin America as his highest achievement, surpassing even his previous work in its strangeness, beauty, and scope. Its throng of unforgettable characters includes academics and convicts, an American sportswriter, an elusive German novelist, and a teenage student and her widowed, mentally unstable father. Their lives intersect in the urban sprawl of Santa Teresa - a fictional Juárez - on the U.S.-Mexico border.

My favorite line in my favorite song about Dallas goes like this: Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eyes / A steel and concrete soul in a warm heart and love disguise... The narrator of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's perfect tune Dallas" is coming to town as a broke dreamer with the bright lights of the big city on his mind. He's just seen the Dallas cityscape through the window of his seat on a DC-9 at night. Is he just beginning his quest?

With novels like Mystic River and Shutter Island, Dennis Lehane has dramatically altered the landscape of the crime thriller—while boldly overstepping the boundaries that have long separated mystery from literature. Now two of his sensational early novels have been combined in a single volume—two gritty and mesmerizing masterworks of suspense featuring the private eye duo of Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro.

Characters with flaws
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
In all honesty, I can't. This book wasn't bad, but wasn't mind blowing either. It was an average story with graphic gore and sexual content thrown in for kicks. For me to recommend a book to a friend, it needs to be extra ordinary, which this book wasn't.
Would you ever listen to anything by James A. Newman again?
I have listened to two book by James A. Newman, both from this same series. Sadly both of them were average. In this book 3 of the series, the characters are somewhat better than book 2, but all of them seemed underdeveloped. All characters are complex and are dealing with their unique issues in the story. But after initial introduction to those, those elements of their character building isn't explored further.
I will try his book from any other series or any standalone book maybe, to see whether the writing style changes or there's better intriguing plot.
Could you see The White Flamingo being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not really, no.

interesting story
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. This detective mystery was pretty different than others i have read previously. It takes place in a fictional city that mirrors Las Vegas. The serial killing in this book has some links to Jack the Ripper and this made it very interesting and the rituals were cool too. Narrator did a good job and was easy to listen too. Glad I listened to it.

A Soild Pulp Noir tale!
A solid Pulp Noir tale of murder and corruption in Fun City.
A brutal murder. Local cops are dirty and the son of a famous 70’s pin up girl known as The White Flamingo looks good for the crime. American Detective and smack fan, Joe Dylan is hired to wade through the seedy underbelly of Thailand to catch the real killer and set her son free.
Nicholas Patrella nailed the narration for this gritty and sometimes brutal crime noir and didn’t miss a beat throughout. I think his narration and pacing really added to the tale and I will be looking out for more stuff from both the author and narrator of this one. 4 Stars and Highly Recommended.

One Second You're Making Cheese Cake, the Next...
What made the experience of listening to The White Flamingo the most enjoyable?
Dark, Violent Noir! I enjoy Dark. I enjoy Noir. I can live with Violent.
"...the Next, You're Dead".
Who was your favorite character and why?
Joe Dylan. He's the main character, so the action is seen through his eyes.
What does Nicholas Patrella bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I've listened to a handful of Nicholas' other audio book projects and have always enjoyed them. A good range of voices, a clear, understandable voice. A good sense of timing and pace.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It's around Five Hours, I had to take a break or two. But I wouldn't have minded listening in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
Fair Warning!! GRAPHIC VIOLENCE AND SEXUALITY. If those bother you, you may want to pass.
Thank you for the opportunity to review it!

A Different Noir
This very different murder mystery of serial killer that takes place in Thailand. It held my interest with the narration and the character of Joe Dylan an American detective and addict. It has suspense, violence with gore and corruption in “Fun City”. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. Thank you.

There's definitely something to be said...
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Certainly was. Despite the story not being my cup of tea and very difficult to follow with its jumpy storytelling at times, there was nothing particularly undesirable with this book. I knew what I was getting into when I decided to listen to this. Anyway, should definitely be noted that Nicholas has a flair for creating a dark mood from start to finish. He's the reason I made my way through to the end.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Lukewarm. I unfortunately couldn't get attached to any of the characters, but the ending itself was creative and left me smirking.
Which character – as performed by Nicholas Patrella – was your favorite?
Would have to say the lead, Joe. He was the most consistent throughout and easy enough to follow.
Did The White Flamingo inspire you to do anything?
No, which is a shame.
Any additional comments?
If you enjoy dark, old-style detective stories with compelling, gruesome situations, this would be what I'd recommend. And if Nicholas is the narrator for it, you should feel that much more compelled to do so.
This book was gifted to me as a free sample by the author or narrator.

This book was not for me
Would you try another book from James A. Newman and/or Nicholas Patrella?
I would only listen to another of James A Newman's books only if it wasn't of a sexual nature. I do not like reading books that contain sexual content as in this book. Even when I'm reading a book with light sex scenes, I skip over those parts.
Has The White Flamingo turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, because each author brings their own content to the table.
Which scene was your favorite?
I did not complete listenining to this book due to the content.
What character would you cut from The White Flamingo?
N/A
Any additional comments?
I would definately listen to books narrated by Nicholas Patrella. He has the type of voice that relaxes and draws you into the story.
