“An uber-sexy escapist paranormal.... The perfect beach read.” (Eloisa James)
“Anyone who loves my work should love Liu’s.” (Christine Feehan)
New York Times best-selling author Marjorie M. Liu has created a dark and complex world of mystery, danger, passion, and sensuality with her remarkable Dirk and Steele novels, and The Wild Road carries us back there once again. Publishers Weekly calls her paranormal stories of love and supernatural adventure “[A] fresh thrill for anyone in the market for an extraordinary romance”, which includes any listener already addicted to the novels of Christine Feehan, Jeaniene Frost, and Nalini Singh.
In The Wild Road, a breathtaking, solitary creature, the last of his race, is irresistibly drawn to a mysterious woman with no memory of who she is but is in obvious peril. Discover why Booklist says, “If you have yet to add Liu to your must-read list, you’re doing yourself a disservice.”

I’m not sure why the summary says Len is “the last of his kind.” His kind may be endangered, but there are enough for him to have dated a few. Also, he has brothers. So, being a gargoyle isn’t like he’s the
last dodo on Earth. On the other side of the romance equation, she is, as advertised, without memory. This makes for a great mystery and unique romance, threaded with a lingering question of how to choose a path without knowing about past entanglements. What if she’s already married? What if she’s evil? What if she hates books?
“Richter is as Richter does.”
This works well as a standalone and does nothing about the series arc involving the evil Consortium. However, it connects to one of Len’s brothers in novella 4 (A Dream of Stone and Shadow) and to some of book 6’s (Soul Song) characters. It also features crow-shifter Coney and anti-hero Richter, who is one of the series standout characters for his complexity and jagged edges. Even though it’s on the darker end,
I recommend listening to book 2 (Shadow Touch) for Richter’s backstory.
