About this listen

A sweeping tale of clashing cultures, warring gods, and forbidden love: In AD 1000, a young Inuit shaman and a Viking warrior become unwilling allies as war breaks out between their peoples and their gods - one that will determine the fate of them all.

"There is a very old story, rarely told, of a wolf that runs into the ocean and becomes a whale."

Born with the soul of a hunter and the spirit of the wolf, Omat is destined to follow in her grandfather's footsteps - invoking the spirits of the land, sea, and sky to protect her people.

But the gods have stopped listening, and Omat's family is starving. Alone at the edge of the world, hope is all they have left.

Desperate to save them, Omat journeys across the icy wastes, fighting for survival with every step. When she meets a Viking warrior and his strange new gods, they set in motion a conflict that could shatter her world...or save it.

Although I will say the first part of the book was hard to get through via subject matter and accepting issues raised from other cultures, the second half of the book was absolutely divine. The story telling was rich and exciting, and I genuinely cared for the characters. This helped the story greatly because I was invested and proper time was taken to provide back story. I really did love this book.

Pleasantly surprised

This is honestly the best book I’ve listen to all year and it’s only February
It’s a really original story and I found myself having a physical reaction to all the little twists and turns throughout the story
I also learned a lot about Inuit and Norse culture

Loved this story. If you liked Circe or Song of Achilles, you’ll enjoy this one too.

Couldn’t turn it off

This was awesome! I loved the intimate story, character development of our protagonist (even if Omat's perception of womanhood did annoy me for most of the book), fantasy in the coat of mythology of gods walking among people, the pacing as well as the slow burn romance.

I also truly enjoyed the audiobook, narrated by the author, which I flew through.
Listening to this audiobook during my February winter walks was such a treat, I'm a little sad that it wasn't even longer, though, truly, I think that the story was just the right length.

Also, while I am no authority on the representation whatsoever, I, personally, thought that the author described the Inuit culture with the deep love and respect. I knew nothing about it beforehand and I found the spirits, tales and people vivid and alive, jumping right out of the page.

This was awesome!

I'm not one that picks favorites easily, but I can and do confidently say that THIS book is a favorite. I LOVE Ohmat and the life journey they experience that we get to witness. I enjoyed the addition or Norse lore and how the author kept it from feeling too random or out of place to the story. They addition of Norse gods feels like it should be wrong, but it was written so well. My only wish would be more to the ending or a sequel. I want to know more about the developed relationship that developed in this book.

Still my favorite

A breath of icy fresh air. Sometimes a difficult listen due to the themes and tension that the author skilfully builds. Also warning for SA.
Overall I’d definitely recommend it.
