About this listen
In this BetterListen Classic Course, recorded in NYC in 1989, Robert A. Johnson, the celebrated author of He, She, and We, revisits two medieval tales and illuminates how this feeling function has become a casualty of our modern times.
Johnson tells the story of the Wounded Fisher King from the Grail Myth to illustrate the anxiety and loneliness that plague men. From the folktale of the Handless Maiden, he explains the very different frustrations of women and describes how these disparities in the way we suffer account for much of the tension and miscommunication between men and women. His insightful analysis shows that these two stories, created centuries ago, are even more relevant today.
This classic from our archives is sure to spark insight and intrigue and shed light on the psyche of men and women.

Story
What does it really mean to be a man? What are some of the landmarks along the road to mature masculinity? And what of the feminine components of a man's personality? Women have developed, over the centuries, considerable expertise in the technique of adapting to men, and for good reason, but that is not the same as truly understanding them. The transition from male childhood to real manhood is a complicated struggle, and explored in this book. As timely today as when it was first published, He provides a fascinating look into male identity and how female dynamics influence men.

Story
Marion Woodman believes that centuries of “patriarchal thinking” have stripped the soul from our inner and outer lives and placed the world in grave danger. In talks, workshops, and BodySoul Rhythms intensives in Canada, the United States, and Europe, she has urged us to engage with the unconscious energy that erupts beneath the surface of our best intentions, sending us where we may not want to go. In this lecture and through case studies, dreams, and myths, the Jungian analyst explores the hidden causes of compulsion in the lives of men and women.

In a world seemingly set up for distraction, life can often feel like it’s dividing you not only from others but also from yourself. Yet even within the cacophony of life, deep down you can intuit your own soul, that part of you that knows you better than you know yourself, and that offers direction and moments of solace, even amid uncertainty. This disconnect from your inner source of guidance leads to self-doubt, but in Living With Borrowed Dust, Hollis provides a reminder that you carry within what you’re so anxiously looking for from a crazed world.

Story
In this extraordinary best seller, James Hillman presents a brilliant vision of our selves, and an exciting approach to the mystery at the center of every life that asks, “What is it, in my heart, that I must do, be, and have? And why?” Drawing on the biographies of figures such as Ella Fitzgerald and Mohandas K. Gandhi, Hillman argues that character is fate, that there is more to each individual than can be explained by genetics and environment. The result is a reasoned and powerful road map to understanding our true nature and discovering an eye-opening array of choices.

Story
A Course in Miracles says that this world and every aspect of it got started when the Son of God remembered not to laugh. What we failed to laugh at is the joke that is ourselves. Now, however, you can have a true experience of metaphysical mirth - you might even, yourself, achieve "full realization".

Good wisdom
Wonderful and wise. The only critique is that it seems the original recording skips past a word or two about a dozen times. Sometimes it isn’t significant, others felt more critical in their importance.
