How many times have you gone through something and said “I could write a book about this!”? Now is the time to stop doubting and start planning! Just as every great meal starts with a recipe, every epic novel starts with an epic outline. But is an outline really necessary? Can’t you just wing it? Isn’t all that time on an outline better spent on actually writing? And doesn’t an outline just pour water on that spark of creativity? That’s what you may have heard…until now! Writing is like The Hare and the Tortoise. Slow and steady will always beat quick and careless.

There are four characters in every story: the victim, the villain, the hero, and the guide. These four characters live inside us. If we play the victim, we’re doomed to fail. If we play the villain, we will not create genuine bonds. But if we play the hero or guide, our lives will flourish. The hard part is being self-aware enough to know which character we are playing. In this book, Donald will use his own experiences to help you recognize if the character you are currently surfacing is helping you experience a life of meaning.

Story structure is one of the most important concepts for a writer to understand - and ironically, one of the least frequently taught. In this book, New York Times best-selling author William Bernhardt explains the elements that make stories work, using examples spanning from Gilgamesh to The Hunger Games.

It does have a good deal of example detail using mostly the popular movies from books, method, or popular shows and TV that all have to use the same elements as a book does - in film. But all writing books I've looked at do this too. This author did well.
You get a great perspective on what you need to consider in the elements of your work.
This is well developed and presented material and clear to its points.
For me, this audiobook was a great reminder that writing is a craft - not a science. It spawns from the joy of reading wonderful tales and seeing great TV and film, and it boils over into the desire for you to write stories just as good. We all have the desire (along with the quest of fame and fortune - learn to write well first) ... the how to do it is a lot tougher than you think. I use (or try to) the elements presented here. And that is the craft - in how - do you develop your story. The author tells you want you need to pay attention to very well. It is up to you to make it happen in your stories.
It does take a deep understanding of the elements presented here. All writing books lead by example. That is all you can do. You may write for many years, and we all try and promote our work. This book is not extensively long. But it covers a lot of the elements and ideas you need to pay attention to.
I found it useful as it is a great reminder of what things a writer needs to pay heed to in the story they want to tell. And do use the chapter arrows as you revisit this book.
Well done.
