Editorial reviews

This recording of Horton Foote's Pulitzer Prize-winning work is an audiobook that will remind senior listeners of pre-television days when radio drama kept them glued to the Motorola. The principals in this drama about shattered lives are a long married husband and wife - first devastated by the death of their son (was it suicide? was he gay?), then by the loss of the husband's job. David Selby and Shirley Knight recreate their acclaimed stage roles with outstanding audio performances. Equally good are the minor characters who round out this compelling listening experience.

Beautiful in all ways.

Sensitively written. Reminded me of Arthur Miller’s writing. The acting was superb and David Selby who played Will couldn’t have been finer.

Beautifully says the things that can not be said

Would you listen to The Young Man from Atlanta again? Why?

No. I feel like I got the jest of the story the first time.

What did you like best about this story?

The way the actors beautifully portrayed the tension of dancing around taboo topics.

What about Shirley Knight and David Selby ’s performance did you like?

You could not help but have a great deal of compassion for these older people making the attempt to navigate a changing world.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last scene when Lily Dale finally accepts what happened to their son.

Short, Sweet and Predictable

While I enjoyed the audio format of this book (it reads as a play) I found the content fairly predictable. Note (as I failed to) that this is a very short book... I meant to get something to listen to on a cross country flight but this book didn't make it half way. My fault.
