About this listen

The audiobook version of the 2014 Saturn Award-winning These Are the Voyages - The Original Series, Season One, at 28 hours, is perhaps the most ambitious audiobook undertaken. Narrated by Vic Mignogna (executive producer and Captain Kirk in the web series Star Trek Continues), this "audio play" documents the creation of the Star Trek TV series and production of its two pilot films and the 28 episodes from its formative first season (1966-67). This unparalleled production boasts a cast of nearly 100, including the voices of many of those who helped make the first Star Trek series.

Great book

Not so great reading. What on earth is up with Bob Justman’s inflection? I knew Bob. He doesn’t sound like this. I do hope that if they do 2 and 3 the narrator has nothing to do with it. LOVE the fact that some of the guests were available to read their parts.

A tour de force!

Easily the most lavish audiobook presentation I’ve ever heard in the almost 20 years I’ve been an Audible subscriber. Mignogna is a masterful narrator and the huge supporting cast lends tremendous verisimilitude to the production

The book is also the most detailed study of the first season of Star Trek TOS.

Best content and performance of any Star Trek book

This was by far the best performed audiobook about Star Trek. It is also the most informative, eye-opening, and downright interesting book about television or film production. I’ve ever heard. In large part due to the extremely candid interoffice memos between the producers and editors of Star Trek. It is not just about the show, it is about how to construct a story and maintain continuity, while using scripts sent in from various brilliant and somewhat egocentric writers. A must read for anyone interested in narrative writing, filmmaking, or story construction.

Great backstop about the making of Star Trek

I would have liked more authentic voices of the voice quotes used to flesh out the story. Some were close to what I would expect, but others sounded like someone the program producer grabbed out of the hallway to fill in a voice.

Marc Cushman and Susan Osborn did an amazing job

This is one of those titles that you think can't be at all interesting, but most of this book was written by looking through Roddenberry's papers, scripts and memos to/from NBC during the course of season 1.

As such, it's a superb record of the creation of Trek, a little bit about the battles with Desilu studios, with NBC execs, and mostly with well-known SciFi authors who hadn't yet mastered the art of writing TV scripts.

There's a lot of personal details about Shatner (surprise, Shatner was well like by the other actors, the guest stars, and the directors) A fair bit about Nimoy and how all the actors were selected.

If you're a fan of TOS, you'll enjoy this book, The reader did a superb job in my opinion. I hope they come out with Volume 2 & 3.

I finally hear the untold drama

I knew there was drama behind the making of this series, but never to the extent as presented here. This book did everything right: presented us the original drafts of each episode, the filming woes, quotes from cast AND crew, and how each episode performed when first aired and how they were reviewed nationwide.
